Device and method for intralumenal anastomosis

An anastomosis device formed from a Shape Memory Alloy (SME) wire that is annealed into a tight coil (e.g., flat coil, helical coil, cylindrical coil) that is subsequently substantially straightened (e.g., straight, longitudinally stretched spring-like shape) for being constrained within an elongate member of an anastomosis introducer instrument. After positioning and holding two tissue walls of adjacent lumens into apposition with a distally presented grasper of the instrument, a piercing tip of the anastomosis device is dispensed and inserted through the tissue walls before being allowed to relax to its tight coil shape, thereby forming the anastomosis attachment. The anastomosis device is released from the anastomosis introducer instrument, such as by fully dispensing its proximal end. Thereby, efficient single lumen anastomosis of gastrointestinal, bilatory, or other vessels may be achieved with a minimum of laparoscopic punctures, or perhaps performed fully as an endoscopic procedure.

The sheath is formed by inserting a bullet into a blunt-ended tube, and inserting the tube into a bullet-shaped bore in a heated die until the tube material is softened and deforms into a rounded bullet shape. Slits are then cut into the distal portion to create the leaflets.

Systems and methods for modifying a heart valve annulus in a minimally invasive surgical procedure. A helical anchor is provided, having a memory set to a coiled shape or state. The helical anchor is further configured to self-revert from a substantially straight state to the coiled state. The helical anchor is loaded within a needle that constrains the helical anchor to the substantially straight state. The needle is delivered to the valve annulus and inserted into tissue of the annulus. The helical anchor is then deployed from the needle (e.g., the needle is retracted from over the helical anchor). Once deployed, the helical anchor self-transitions toward the coiled shape, cinching engaged tissue of the valve annulus.

The ribbon-like filament may be etched from a flat sheet of material, having barbs formed along one edge. The filament may then be wrapped into a helical coil shape to take the form of an implant having barbs formed along the proximally facing edge of each coil to resist migration.
