A rod-shaped implant element (1, 100, 101, 102, 300) is disclosed for the connection of bone anchoring elements, Each bone anchoring element has an anchoring section (12) to be anchored in the bone and a receiver member (13) to be connected to the rod-shaped implant element The rod-shaped implant element has at least one rigid section (7, 8) that is configured to be placed in the receiver member (13). It also has a flexible section (9, 90, 900, 902) that is adjacent to the rigid section. The flexible section and the rigid section are formed in one piece. The present invention is directed to a bone plate and its method of use for reducing a bone fracture, the bone plate having a longitudinal axis, the bone plate comprising an upper surface, a lower surface, a first hole for engaging a head of a first bone anchor. The first hole is configured and adapted to fix a shaft of the first bone anchor along a first axis. A second hole is spaced apart from the first hole along the longitudinal axis. The second hole is for engaging a head of a second bone anchor, and is configured and adapted to fix a shaft of the second bone anchor along a second axis. The first hole and the second hole are configured such that the first axis and the second axis define a single plane and intersect at a point below the lower surface. The shafts of the first and second bone anchors may touch or nearly touch at the point of intersection, such that the first and second bone anchors form a truss.

Knotless fixation of soft tissue to bone is accomplished using a bone anchor configured to provide interference fixation of a soft-tissue connector. The apparatus includes a base plate, a first mounting block mounted to the base plate and having a first reference surface against which the first anchor assembly is mountable, a second mounting block slidably mounted to the base plate and having a second reference surface against which a bone anchor of the second anchor assembly is mountable, a measurement bar extending from the second mounting block and slidable relative to the first mounting block, a support block slidably mounted to the measurement bar having a third reference surface for abutting against a tissue presentation surface of the second anchor assembly, and a tensioning device for tensioning a graft attached to the first anchor assembly. Disclosed herein are methods and devices for securing soft tissue to a rigid material such as bone. A bone anchor is described that comprises an anchor body with expandable tines and a spreader that expands the tines into bone. Also disclosed is a bone anchor that comprises a base and a top such that suture material may be attached to apertures in the anchor top or else compressed between surfaces on the base and top to secure the suture to the anchor. Also described is an inserter that can be used to insert the bone anchor into bone and move the spreader relative to the anchor body attach suture material. Also described is an inserter that can be used to insert the bone anchor into bone and move the anchor top relative to the anchor body or anchor base to attach to or clamp suture material there between. Methods are described that allow use of single bone anchor to secure tissue to bone or also to use more than one bone anchor to provide multiple lengths of suture material to compress a large area of soft tissue against bone.

The invention relates to a deployment systems for deploying a bone fixation device. One embodiment of a deployment system includes a syringe-shaped body configured to provide proximal traction to a bone fixation device in response to a compressive force between a finger grip and a plunger adapted to be engaged by the heel of a clinician's hand. The device may include a collet for gripping a proximal pin of a fixation device. The deployment device may also include a tool that includes an elongate body with a distal tip adapted to rotationally engage a bone fixation device in order to axially rotate the fixation device. A further deployment device embodiment includes a cauterizing tip for heat-cutting an excess portion of a pin of a bone fixation device.

Implant and delivery systems for soft tissue repair which affix soft tissue portions to a region of bone are described. Generally, the assembly includes two bone anchors preloaded through an inserter handle such that each anchor is penetrated into the bone directly. The first anchor is inserted through the tissue and into the bone, where it is locked into position. The first anchor has a suture or wire that protrudes through the tissue and threads through the second anchor and is secured to a rotatable suture reel located along the handle. The second anchor is inserted through the tissue and into the bone independently of the first anchor. Once the second anchor is deployed, the suture or wire is tensioned to secure the soft tissue to the bone and a suture plug within the second anchor is deployed to lock the suture or wire in place.

A surgical driver includes an elongated drive shaft engageable with a surgical bone anchor in torque transmitting relationship, a locking sleeve, and a sleeve locking member. The locking sleeve is mounted to the drive shaft and is engageable with the head of surgical bone anchor. Methods and apparatus for connecting to a bone, which avoid the use of bone screws. A triangular shaped modular implant is used, with two sides of the structure and their respective vertex secured generally within the bone, with the base of the triangle outside the bone. These two arms, whether straight or arcuate, are cannulated, and are held together at their distal ends by a tightened cable that runs through both of the arms. The proximal ends of these arms are connected to a base side that completes the triangular structure. The device may be inserted into a vertebra and the base used for vertebral fusion. Alternatively, the arms themselves may be used to stabilize and fixate adjacent vertebrae, by insertion through adjacent vertebrae trans-segmentally. In the latter case, the vertex may be within the intervertebral space or within the vertebral body close to the intervertebral space.

A bone plate for fixation of a fractured bone comprises a first portion having a first longitudinal axis, an upper surface and a lower surface and a second portion having a second longitudinal axis, an upper surface and a lower surface. The second portion is angled with respect to the first portion such that the lower surface of the first portion and the lower surface of the second portion define an included angle therebetween. The first portion has at least one hole for receiving a bone anchor having a shaft. The hole has a first hole portion defining a first central axis substantially perpendicular to the lower surface and the first hole portion is configured to receive the bone anchor. The hole includes a second hole portion overlapping and in communication with the first hole portion from upper to lower surface defining a second central axis substantially angled with respect to the first central axis, the second hole portion is configured to receive the bone anchor such that the shaft is substantially angled with respect to the second portion of the bone plate so as to form a truss.
