3013 results about "Power steering" patented technology

In motor vehicles, a power steering system helps drivers steer the vehicle by augmenting steering effort needed to turn the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to turn. Hydraulic or electric actuators add controlled energy to the steering mechanism, so the driver can provide less effort to turn the steered wheels when driving at typical speeds, and reduce considerably the physical effort necessary to turn the wheels when a vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. Power steering can also be engineered to provide some artificial feedback of forces acting on the steered wheels.

Detecting driver grip on steering wheel

Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to determining by what degree a driver is gripping a steering wheel. In one example, a computer may send an electrically assisted power steering system (EPS) motor an excitation command to move. The EPS motor may respond by moving a flexible coupling between the steering wheel and the EPS motor. This may cause a corresponding movement at the steering wheel. A torque sensor may generate pattern data by monitoring the flexible coupling during the movement. The EPS motor may generate system position data for the entire steering system, for example, from the tires to the steering wheel. The pattern data and the system position data may be compared by the computer to determine the degree of grip. In this regard, the computer may determine the degree of a driver's grip without the need for additional sensors.

Automatic fluid exchanger

A fluid exchanger for servicing the fluid circuits of vehicular power steering systems and other fluid circulating or hydraulic circuits. The fluid exchanger uses a float operated fluid control valve to harness fluid pressure provided by a pump of an accessed hydraulic circuit. The fluid control valve uses both negative and positive pressure of the circuit's pump to control fluid flow patterns. The float and fluid control valve are matched to be either mechanical / hydraulic or electrical / hydraulic in design. If the exchanger is provided with a mechanically operated fluid control valve, a mechanical float is provided in the exchanger's fresh fluid reservoir and is directly connected to the valve slide of the fluid control valve. If the exchanger is provided with an electric solenoid operated fluid control valve, a float operated electrical switch is provided in the exchanger's fresh fluid reservoir and is wired to control the solenoid of the valve.

Power Supply Controller

A power supply controller controls the output of a DC / DC converter, so that the power output can be used not only by an electrical power steering apparatus, but by other operating / driving controllers as well. The controller may command the DC / DC converter to reduce the voltage of the high-voltage battery to a prescribed voltage or to boost the voltage of the low-voltage battery to a prescribed voltage when appropriate. In addition, the controller may also command the gradual reduction of the power supplied by the DC / DC converter to the power steering apparatus. The gradual reduction in power prevents a sudden change in the steering feel, which improves drivability of the vehicle.
