Communication system and method

The present invention relates to a communication system and method and, more particularly, to a fault tolerant network element for providing fault tolerant call connections in the event of a failure of, for example, a Gatekeeper or other part of a network. Calls set up across a network consume large amounts of resources both throughout the network and at the devices which form the end points of the network. Therefore, even though a call connection may be supported, in the event of the failure of a network element, it is often the case that there is an ungraceful failure or use of resources throughout the network. Accordingly, an aspect of the present invention provides a method for preserving a connection context at a first layer of a communication protocol; the communication protocol comprising a second, higher, signalling layer in which, in response to a switch-over from an active host to a standby host in the event of failure of the former, the connection is terminated in response to receipt of a signalling layer signal other than a disconnect or terminate signal.

In a power conversion device provided with a power semiconductor device and a semiconductor driver circuit for driving the power semiconductor device, false firing can be prevented, and improvement in reliability can be achieved. The power conversion device is provided with: a first switch element inserted between a power supply voltage and an output node; a second switch element inserted between a ground power supply voltage and the output node; and a gate driver circuit for controlling turning ON / OFF of the second switch element. When the second switch element is controlled to be turned OFF, the gate driver circuit drives a gate-source voltage at, for example, a level of 0 V. However, when the first switch element is shifted from an OFF state to an ON state at a first timing in a state that the gate-source voltage is driven at, for example, the level of 0 V, the gate driver circuit temporarily applies a level of a negative voltage as the gate-source voltage during a first period which crosses over the first timing.

Efficient location determination for mobile units

The inventive system allows for more efficient use of resources for providing location information in a wireless network where multiple sources of such information may be available. In one implementation, a first source of location information such as Cell ID information is used to monitor the location of a mobile unit. The first source may provide sufficient location information in many instances. For example, in the case of a location-based billing application, Cell ID information may be sufficient in some cases to indicate that a subscriber is within or outside of a home zone. In other cases, more accurate information may be required to make such a determination. When required, a more accurate source of information such as TDOA or GPS information may be invoked. The invention allows for more efficient use of the multiple sources by allowing for reduction of the instances where a high resource location information source is accessed.

A route planning system and method for a navigation system which allows the driver to intelligently plan the route when adding waypoints. The route planning navigation system includes a route planning processor which allows the driver to add and prioritize multiple POIs as waypoints. When one or more new waypoints are added, the driver is allowed to prioritize the waypoints if adding new waypoints does not significantly increase the cost of the route, and an optimized route is generated accordingly. In another aspect, if adding new waypoint significantly increases the cost of the route, a notifying message will be generated by the route planning processor so that the driver is able to make a decision whether to proceed to the new waypoint.
