Methods and apparatus for downloading data between an information processing device and an external device via a wireless communications technique

To provide an improved information processing apparatus and a method for controlling the same, which enables to smoothly transfer data, such as processed results obtained from execution of an application program, an HTML file acquired from a Web server in accordance with the TCP / IP protocol or the like, to an external device (PDA) by using an infrared communication function. The disclosed information processing apparatus periodically accesses a predetermined server machine (e.g., a Web server) to acquire a desired file (e.g., an HTML file). This file acquisition operation is carried out without the involvement of operations of an infrared transceiver. In other words, the information processing apparatus attempts to continually perform caching of the most recent download data. As a result, when the PDA as an external device is set into an infrared communication mode and a user simply holds the PDA to a station discoverable region of the information processing apparatus, a connection between them is established, thereby enabling the PDA to receive the most recent data.

Speech recognition with feedback from natural language processing for adaptation of acoustic models

A speech recognition unit performs speech recognition on input speech based on models, such as HMMs, and supplies a speech recognition result to a dialog management unit. The dialog management unit forms a reply to the speech recognition result. In this case, the dialog management unit detects zones in which the speech recognition result is correct based on the speech recognition result and the associated reply, and feeds them back to the speech recognition unit. Then, the speech recognition unit performs on-line adaptation of the models based on the speech of the correct zones fed back from the dialog management unit and the associated speech recognition result.

Storage subsystem

The data up to a point of time whereat failure has occurred will be restored at high speed at a remote site without imposing any burden on a host. The first storage system on the master side processes an I / O request from the host, and as a result of I / O processing to the second storage system on the remote side, transmits the update data. The second storage system retains data received from the first storage system as update log data. The host transmits a command for settling a state of an application to the first storage system as data, and the first storage system transmits the data to the second storage system. The host and the second storage system both retain an identifier corresponding to the command, and relate the identifier to the log data. Thereby, the host designates the identifier at any given time, whereby the second storage system restores the data at any given time.

Method for detecting physiological condition of sleeping patient based on analysis of pulse waves

A physiological condition detecting method detects pulse waves from the body of a patient, and creates the envelope of the pulse waves by connecting every peak of the pulse waves. It determines that the patient is in non-REM sleep, if the envelope fluctuates regularly. It determines that the patient is in REM sleep, if the envelope fluctuates irregularly. Further the method calculates and normalizes the amplitude and period of the envelope. It determines whether the patient has obstructive sleep apnea syndrome based on the normalized amplitude. It determines whether the patient has central sleep apnea syndrome based on the normalized period. It determines that the patient has mixed sleep apnea syndrome based on the normalized amplitude and the normalized period.

Electronic musical instrument creating timbre by optimum synthesis mode

An electronic musical instrument has a composite sound source for generating a musical tone, and includes a first synthesizing circuit for creating a variety of timbres of the musical tone having a superior quality and a second synthesizing circuit for creating another variety of timbres of the musical tone having an inferior quality. The instrument admits designation information effective to designate one of the first and second synthesizing circuits to be activated and effective to designate a timbre to be created by the designated one of the first and second synthesizing circuits. A detector operates when the second synthesizing circuit is designated for providing a detection signal if the designated timbre can be also created by the first synthesizing circuit. A controller responds to the detection signal for altering the admitted designation information so that the first synthesizing circuit is activated in place of the second synthesizing circuit so as to create the designated timbre by the superior quality.
