Methods and systems for supplying supplemental oxygen to patients for use in sub-acute care which maintains healthy blood oxygen content in the patients by controlled dosing of oxygen with a measured response to the patient's actual blood oxygen content are disclosed. The dosing can be provided by simple ON / OFF control over the delivery of oxygen or the amount of oxygen delivered to the patient with each inhalation can be varied in response to the patient's need as determined by a more sophisticated control scheme, such as a PID loop control algorithm, that utilizes the difference between the patient's actual blood oxygen content and a target blood oxygen content and / or trends in the blood oxygen content. A combustion reaction occurs in the reaction tube 2 and thereby the organic substances adhering to the wafers 10 are oxidized, decomposed and removed.

Apparatus and method for mask free delivery of an inspired gas mixture and gas sampling

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for the delivery of inspired gas, e.g., supplemental O2, to a person combined with gas sampling, including for the purpose of monitoring of the ventilation of the person. In the invention, the delivery of inspired gas and gas sampling are accomplished without the use of a sealed face mask. The apparatus of one embodiment of the present invention comprises an oxygen delivery device, nasal airway pressure sampling devices, optionally an oral airway pressure sampling device and at least one pressure analyzer connected to the sampling devices which determine the phase of the person's respiration cycle and the person's primary airway. The oxygen delivery device is connected to a controller such that it delivers a higher flow of oxygen to the person during the inhalation phase of the person's respiratory cycle. The invention thus increases end tidal oxygen concentrations. The invention further comprises carbon dioxide sampling tubes that continuously sample gas from two nasal sites and the mouth. The nasal sampling tubes are connected to a switching valve that is in turn connected to a capnometer which determines carbon dioxide concentration during exhalation. The oral gas sampling site is connected to a second capnometer.

Mask free delivery of oxygen and ventilatory monitoring

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for the delivery of supplemental oxygen gas to a person combined with the monitoring of the ventilation of the person with both being accomplished without the use of a sealed face mask. Preferred embodiments of the present invention combine an oxygen delivery device, a nasal airway pressure sampling device, an oral airway pressure sampling device, and a pressure analyzer connected to the sampling devices to determine the phase of the person's respiration cycle and the person's primary airway. The oxygen delivery device is connected to a controller such that it delivers a higher flow of oxygen to the person during the inhalation phase of the person's respiratory cycle. The invention thus increases end tidal oxygen concentrations with improved efficiency comparative to known open airway devices. Embodiments of the invention can include carbon dioxide sampling tubes that continuously sample air from the nose and mouth to determine carbon dioxide concentration during exhalation.

A respiratory device is disclosed that optimizes delivery of oxygen and detection of carbon dioxide to a user through the use of a flexible lever arm and mouthpiece which may be adjusted to deliver the oxygen toward the user's oral and nasal cavities, and detect carbon dioxide, exhaled by the user, from a separate orifice of the mouthpiece. The lever is supported by a rotatable adapter attached to a head mounted brace. The adapter can rotate through 180° for placement of the lever on either side of the user's head. The adapter is hinged to eliminate occluding and kinking during rotation. A hose having tubular members therein delivers the gases to and from the user. The hose traverses through the lever arm and adapter, terminating at the lever arm into the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece has a plurality of ports for fluid flow. The hose terminates at the other end in gas detection and delivery equipment. The hose may be segmented or one continuous piece.

Oxygen delivery cannula system that improves the effectiveness of alveolar oxygenation

The pulmonary oxygen flow control system delivers oxygen from a source of pressure to a nasal cannula worn by the patient. Between the source and the nasal cannula is a pendant flow structure which includes an orifice followed by a gas dynamic valve. When the downstream pressure in the cannula is high, the gas dynamic valve diverts the oxygen flow through the orifice to a flexible reservoir. Upon inhalation, the pressure at the cannula falls so that the gas dynamic valve delivers the orifice flow to the cannula and also utilizes a Venturi effect to withdraw oxygen from the reservoir and deliver it to the cannula. The cannula has nasal tubes which have angular faces and which are positioned farther into the nares to deliver the oxygen more efficiently.

Lightweight oxygen delivery device for patients

A lightweight oxygen delivery device is provided for a patient is provided, the device comprising an elongated tube bendable to a particular shape and capable of maintaining that shape. The tube is adapted to carry oxygen and has a first end and a second end. The first end is releasably connectable to an oxygen delivery source. To the second end of the tube is secured an end of a rigid elbow. One of those ends being secured to the second end of the tube and an oxygen diffuser connected to the other end of the elbow. Flexible wings are secured to the tube, between its ends, the wings extending outwardly to either side. An elongated flexible strap is secured to and extends between the wings, the strap to extend around a patient's head and secure the wings in position to hold the diffuser proximal to the patient's nose and mouth.

The present invention advantageously provides a method of automatically delivering oxygen to a patient. A desired concentration of oxygen in a bloodstream of a patient is received from a user. Data, including a measurement of the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream of the patient, as well as status information associated with the measurement, is received from a sensor. The measured data are determined to be valid or invalid based on the measurement value and the status information, and, based on this determination, a delivered fraction of inspired oxygen is delivered to the patient. If the measured data are determined to be valid, then the delivered fraction of inspired oxygen is based on the desired oxygen concentration and the measured data. On the other hand, if the measured data are determined to be invalid, then the delivered fraction of inspired oxygen is set to a predetermined value.

Compositions containing a carrier and microbubles encapsulating one or more gases, preferably oxygen, and methods for making and using the compositions are described herein. The microbubbles contain a lipid envelope formed of at least one base lipid and at least one emulsifying agent. Process integrating a solid oxide fuel cell and an ion transport reactor

A high-efficiency liquid oxygen (LOX) storage / delivery system utilizes a portable LOX / delivery apparatus with a portable LOX container. Self-calibrating supplemental oxygen delivery system

An on demand supplemental oxygen delivery system that is self-calibrating includes a tank containing a supply of oxygen and a nasal cannula through which the oxygen may be provided to a patient when the system solenoid valve is in the open condition. When the valve is in the closed condition, the cannula communicates with a pressure transducer via a transducer line. An orifice is formed in the line so that the pressure within the transducer line goes to atmospheric pressure when the valve is in the open condition. The pressure transducer reads the atmospheric pressure and directs it to a system controller where it is stored as a reference pressure.
