A method is disclosed for determining estimates of the perceived noise masking level of audio signals as a function of frequency. By developing a randomness metric related to the euclidian distance between (i) actual frequency components amplitude and phase for each block of sampled values of the signal and (ii) predicted values for these components based on values in prior blocks, it is possible to form a tonality index which provides more detailed information useful in forming the noise masking function. Application of these techniques is illustrated in a coding and decoding context for audio recording or transmission. An echo mask based on magnitude envelopes of the primary and far-end acoustic signals for each frequency sub-band is generated. Methods and systems for correlated noise suppression are presented. The present correlated noise suppression technique estimates a correlation direction between noise values in a first and a second MD image corresponding to a first and a second basis material, respectively. The two MD images are diffused using the estimated correlation direction to generate a first and a second diffused image. Further, first and second noise masks are generated by subtracting the diffused image from the corresponding MD image. Edges in the first and the second MD images are processed with the first and second noise masks, respectively to generate a final first noise mask and a final second noise mask. The first MD image is then processed with the final second noise mask to generate a final first MD image and the second MD image is processed with the final first noise mask to generate a final second MD image.

A method and system for displaying fractional bit data in order to increase the bit depth of a PWM display without requiring the use of an excessive number of bit planes. One embodiment of the present invention combines the outputs of two random number generators (702) with the outputs of a row counter (704) and column counter (706) to yield row and column indexes into two 32×32 cell blue noise masks. The row and column indexes select a blue noise mask threshold for a given pixel. The threshold from the first blue noise mask (708) is applied to a comparator (710) where it is compared to the fractional bit portion of the pixel data. A first blue noise bit, BN(1), is generated based on this comparison. Typically, BN(1) is a “1” when the fractional portion of the pixel data exceeds the threshold value from the mask. The same threshold data is also processed by inverter (712) to produce the threshold that would be shored in an inverted form of Mask A. Inverter (712) prevents the circuitry from having to store four separate blue noise masks. The output of the inverter (712) is also compared to the fractional pixel data to produce a second blue noise bit, BN(2). In the same manner, the second blue noise mask (714) is used to generate two additional blue noise bits. The four blue noise bits are then used alternately in the quad-frame display of FIG. 5 with the integer portion of the pixel data.

The data adjust block (410) receives the LSBs of the input data word and apportions the intensity between the various fractional bits and perhaps one or more binary bit. Allocating the data between the fractional and binary bits allows the gradual feathering in of each more significant bit as the image intensity word increases.
