Methods and systems to offload overlay network packet encapsulation to hardware

A method for offloading packet encapsulation for an overlay network is provided. The method, at a virtualization software of a host, sends a mapping table of the overlay network to a physical network interface controller (NIC) associated with the host. The mapping table maps the identification of each of a set of virtual machine (VM) of a tenant on the host to an identification of a tunnel on the overlay network. The method, at the virtualization software, receives a packet from a VM of the tenant. The method sends the packet to the physical NIC. The method, at the physical NIC, encapsulates the packet for transmission over the overlay network by using the mapping table. The method of claim also tags the packet by the virtualization software as a packet that requires encapsulation for transmission in the overlay network prior to sending the packet to the physical NIC.

Configurable access control security for virtualization

Provided are systems and methods for applying access controls to separate and contain virtual machines in a flexible, configurable manner. Access can be granted or removed to a variety of system resources—including network cards, shared folders, and external devices. Operations, such as cut and paste, between the virtual machines can be restricted or allowed. Virtual machines are run in containers. This allows more than one virtual machine to share the same access profile. Containers can be configured to allow a user to instantiate a virtual machine at run time. This allows the user to dynamically define which virtual machines run in various containers. An administrator determines which containers (if any) allow dynamic instantiation, and specifies the list of virtual machines the user can choose from. A container, and / or virtual machines within the container, can be restricted to particular users.

Interface monitoring for link aggregation

The present invention provides network interface monitoring and management that may be employed with link aggregation technologies. Multiple network interfaces may be aggregated into a single bond and data may be transferred to and from a backbone network via this aggregated bond. A link aggregation monitor employs a heartbeat generator, sniffer and data store to keep track of health and availability of network interfaces. The heartbeat generator sends heartbeats to the network interfaces, which pass the heartbeats around in a token ring configuration. If a network interface fails or otherwise goes offline, detection of this condition causes the monitor and heartbeat generator to prepare new or modified heartbeats so that data may be efficiently and accurately routed around the token ring and health of all remaining alive interfaces can be monitored properly. If a network interface re-enters or is added to the aggregate bond, new / modified heartbeats are then employed.

Receive coalescing and automatic acknowledge in network interface controller

An apparatus and method is disclosed for reducing the computational overhead incurred by a host processor during packet processing and improving network performance by adding additional functionality to a Network Interface Controller (NIC). Under certain circumstances the NIC coalesces multiple receive packets into a single coalesced packet stored within a coalesce buffer in host memory. The coalesced packet includes an Ethernet header, a coalesced Internet Protocol (IP) header, a coalesced Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) header, and a coalesced TCP payload containing the TCP payloads of the multiple receive packets. By coalescing received packets into fewer larger coalesced packets within the host memory, the host software needed to process a receive packet will be invoked less often, meaning that less processor overhead is incurred in the host.

Method and apparatus for stateless transport layer tunneling

Some embodiments of the invention provide a method of tunneling a data packet by encapsulating the data packet with a protocol header and specifying information in the fields of the header in a manner that a network switch can offload processing tasks to its network interface controller. The switch on a transmit side sends the processed data packet through the tunnel to another switch on a receive side. The two sides represent the two ends of the tunnel established between the two switches. Each of the transmit and received side switches is controlled by a switch controller, which in some embodiments is implemented as software. The switch controllers and network interface controllers together process the data packet which is being transferred through the tunnel between the switches.

Packet telephone system

A packet telephone system which employs a packet network that provides virtual circuits. The packet telephone system employs short packets containing compressed speech. The use of the short packets makes possible compression and decompression times and bounded delays in the virtual circuits which are together short enough to permit toll-quality telephone service. The packet telephone system employs an intelligent network interface unit to interface between the packet network and standard telephone devices. The network interface unit does the speech compression and decompression and also responds to control packets from the packet network. Consequently, many telephone system features can be implemented in the network interface unit instead of in the switches. The network interface unit may also be used to provide data connections to devices attached to it. The combination of virtual circuits, with bounded delays, short packets, rapid compression and decompression, and intelligent network interface units makes it possible to build a telephone system with fewer and cheaper switches and fewer links for a given volume of traffic than heretofore possible and also permits substantial savings in provisioning and maintaining the system.
