Optomechanically-responsive materials for use as light-activated actuators and valves

The present invention provides a photoactuator comprising a plurality of nanoparticles and a thermally sensitive material. The photoactuator is useful for a variety of applications including macroscale and nanoscale applications. The nanoparticles are in thermal contact with the thermally sensitive material. The nanoparticles are engineered to achieve peak resonance at a given wavelength of light such that upon illumination. Upon illumination of the thermally sensitive material, the nanoparticles convert the light to heat, which is transferred to the thermally sensitive material, inducing a change in volume in the thermally sensitive material. The present invention is useful for actuating devices, especially in microfluidic devices. Methods for making a photoactuator and various embodiments thereof are also provided.

Methods for performing microfluidic sampling

Methods for performing microfluidic sampling are provided. The method includes providing a substrate including an arrangement of first, second and third electrodes, wherein the second electrode is interposed between the first and third electrodes. The method additionally includes causing a fluid input to continuously flow to the first electrode and biasing the first, second and third electrodes to a first voltage to cause a portion of the fluid input to spread across the second and third electrodes. The method further includes biasing the second electrode to a second voltage different from the first voltage to form a droplet on the third electrode, the droplet being separate from the fluid input.

Special micro-fluidic chip for cholera diagnosis with one-dimensional self-assembly magnetic bead chain electrodes

The invention relates to a special micro-fluidic chip for cholera diagnosis with one-dimensional self-assembly magnetic bead chain electrodes, belonging to the field of testing. Rapid diagnosis of fulminating infectious disease cholera with low cost is one of many expectations in the development of medical technology, and the invention provides a micro-fluidic chip for simultaneously detecting and rapidly diagnosing cholera by using multiple characteristic antibodies of cholera. The chip is provided with three micro liquid storage tanks, and the invention is characterized in that capillary passages in parallel configuration contain in the chip, the parallel configuration contains four micro-passages that are mutually in parallel, four magnetic bead chain working electrodes are respectively installed inside the four micro-passages, the surface substances of the four magnetic bead chain working electrodes are respectively four antibody substances that are cholera TP0821 antibody, cholera TP0319 antibody, cholera TP0624 antibody and cholera O139 mycoprotein antibody. The integrated structure and the appearances of specific magnetic bead chain working electrodes facilitate to improve the diagnosis efficiency of cholera diseases.

Method for covering a microfluidic assembly

A method for covering a set of open microchannel structures which are fabricated on a planar surface made of plastics and which comprise two or more part areas that have different surface characteristics. The method comprises the steps of: a) providing the surface comprising the set of microchannel structures; b) providing a lid-forming sheet having on one side an even layer of a thermoglue; c) applying the side of the sheet having the thermoglue against the surface carrying the microchannel structure; d) heating the assembly created in step (c) to selectively liquefy the hot-melt adhesive while at the same time pressing the sheet material and the planar surface of the substrate together; e) permitting the resulting laminate-covered microchannel structure to cool. An assembly comprising (a) a planar substrate, the surface of which has a set of one or more open microchannel structures each of which comprises part areas representing different functionalities, and (b) a lid-forming material covering said set of microchannel structures and having one or more openings going from a microchannel structure to ambient atmosphere. The assembly is characterized in that the joint between said surface and said sheet material is a thermoglue that possibly has been cured.

Valved, microwell cell-culture device and method

A valved microfluidics device, microfluidics cell-culture device and system incorporating the devices are disclosed. The valved microfluidics device includes a substrate, a microchannel through which liquid can be moved from one station to another within the device, and a pneumatic microvalve adapted to be switched between open and closed states to control the flow of fluid through a microchannel. The microvalve is formed of three flexible membranes, one of which is responsive to pneumatic pressure applied to the valve and the other two of which deform to produce a more sealable channel cross-section. The cell culture device provides valving to allow controlled loading of cells into the individual well of the device, and exchange of cell-culture components in the wells.

Microfluidic apparatus and methods for performing blood typing and crossmatching

Microfluidic cartridges for agglutination reactions are provided. The cartridges include a microfluidic reaction channel with at least two intake channels, one for an antigen-containing fluid and the other for an antibody-containing fluid, conjoined to a reaction channel modified by incorporation of a downstream flow control channel. At low Reynolds Number, the two input streams layer one on top of the other in the reaction channel and form a flowing, unmixed horizontally-stratified laminar fluid diffusion (HLFD) interface for an extended duration of reaction. Surprisingly, the design, surface properties, and flow regime of microfluidic circuits of the present invention potentiate detection of antibody mediated agglutination at the stratified interface. Antigen:antibody reactions involving agglutination potentiated by these devices are useful in blood typing, in crossmatching for blood transfusion, and in immunodiagnostic agglutination assays, for example.
