1207 results about "Decibel" patented technology

The decibel (symbol: dB) is a unit of measurement used to express the ratio of one value of a power or field quantity to another, on a logarithmic scale, the logarithmic quantity being called the power level or field level, respectively. It can be used to express a change in value (e.g., +1 dB or −1 dB) or an absolute value. In the latter case, it expresses the ratio of a value to a fixed reference value; when used in this way, a suffix that indicates the reference value is often appended to the decibel symbol. For example, if the reference value is 1 volt, then the suffix is "V" (e.g., "20 dBV"), and if the reference value is one milliwatt, then the suffix is "m" (e.g., "20 dBm").

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications device and method that incorporates low papr preamble with circuit for measuring frequency response of the communications channel

A communications device includes a demapping and demodulation circuit and processes an OFDM communications signal that includes modulated subcarriers carrying communications data forming a data payload and modulated subcarriers carrying a training sequence forming a preamble. Those OFDM subcarriers carrying the training sequence have a sample for each subcarrier at a frequency bin using evenly spaced, equal amplitude subcarriers that have a set phase of each sinusoid to a specific angle with quadratic phase to form a low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) preamble with about a PAPR value of 2.6 decibels (dB). A channel estimate circuit is operative for measuring fluctuations within a flat-top spectrum of the received OFDM communications signal corresponding to the preamble to reflect the frequency response of the communications channel.

Method and apparatus for reducing noise in speech and audio signals

A method and apparatus are disclosed for enhancing, within a signal bandwidth, a corrupted audio-frequency signal. The signal which is to be enhanced is analyzed into plural sub-band signals, each occupying a frequency sub-band smaller than the signal bandwidth. A respective signal gain function is applied to each sub-band signal, and the respective sub-band signals are then synthesized into an enhanced signal of the signal bandwidth. The signal gain function is derived, in part, by measuring speech energy and noise energy, and from these determining a relative amount of speech energy, within the corresponding sub-band. In certain embodiments of the invention, the signal gain function is also derived, in part, by determining a relative amount of speech energy within a frequency range greater than, but centered on, the corresponding sub-band. In other embodiments of the invention, the sub-band noise energy is determined from a noise estimate that is updated at periodic intervals, but is not updated if the newest sample of the signal to be enhanced exceeds the current noise estimate by a multiplicative threshold (i.e., a threshold expressible in decibels). In still other embodiments of the invention, the value of the noise estimate is limited by an upper bound that is matched to the dynamic range of the signal to be enhanced.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications device and method that incorporates low papr preamble and receiver channel estimate circuit

A communications device includes a demapping and demodulation circuit that demaps and demodulates an OFDM communications signal as modulated subcarriers carrying communications data and modulated subcarriers carrying a training sequence forming a preamble that includes a long sync sequence for channel and frequency offset estimation having a extended guard interval (GI). The OFDM subcarriers carrying the training sequence have a quadratic modulation to produce a low peak-to-average power (PAPR) preamble with PAPR of approximately 2.6 decibels (dB). A channel estimate circuit is positioned to receive signals after processing within a FFT circuit and subcarrier demapper circuit and estimates the channel characteristics of the communications channel based on splitting the extended guard interval from the long sync sequence and processing into values that represent the low PAPR preamble as plus or minus one (±1) values in a real or imaginary component as adds and subtracts.

FEXT determination system

Operational data is utilized to determine the FEXT interference induced by one line into the other DSL line. FEXT interference can be calculated using the NEXT interference measured between the two lines at the upstream ends of the loops and the downstream channel transfer function of one of the loops. Because the NEXT and transfer function constitute a linear time-invariant system, as does the FEXT interference between the lines, the NEXT interference and line transfer function can be multiplied (if in linear format) or added (if in logarithmic format) to approximate the FEXT interference between the lines. The collection of data, calculations and other functions performed in these techniques may be performed by a system controller, such as a DSL optimizer. An Xlog(u,n) quantity is a decibel-magnitude representation of the insertion-loss equivalent of FEXT transfer functions and is defined as the ratio of (1) a line u's source power into a matched load of 100 Ohms when no binder is present to (2) the power at the output of the subject line when line u is excited with the same source and the binder is present. Xlin(u,n) is the linear equivalent of Xlog(u,n). The Xlog(u,n) and Xlin(u,n) quantities may be represented in specific formats that assist in their use in DSL and other systems. When defined as a line's insertion loss, Xlin (or equivalently Xlog) does not include the effect of any transmit filter.

Distributed RF front-end for UWB receivers

Described herein are ultra wide-band distributed RF (UWB-DRF) front-end receivers comprising composite cells distributed along transmission lines, where each composite cell comprises a low-noise amplifier (LNA) merged with a mixer. By merging the LNA and the mixer in each composite cell, the power consumption and chip area of the RF front-end is reduced. Further, the distributed architecture of the RF front-end allows it to operate over a wide bandwidth by absorbing the parasitic capacitances of the composite cells into the transmission lines of the RF-front end. Embodiments of the RF front-end provide wideband flat gain, low noise figure (NF), wideband linearity, and wideband matching at the inputs of the RF front-end. In an embodiment, a programmable resistance at the termination of the RF transmission line allows the RF front-end to trade off a few decibels of mismatch at the RF input for higher gain and lower NF.
