Voice and fax over IP call establishment in a communications network

In a communications network, voice and facsimile calls are established between first and second and second terminals via first and second media gateways in a communications network. Each gateway is capable of autonomous transitioning between a voice over IP (VoIP) call mpde and a facsimile ov er IP (FoIP) call mode. A bearer path for the call is established via a media gateway controller. During call setup, the media gateways exchange confirmation of each gateway's capability to perform autonomous transitioning between VoIP and FoIP call modes. The call is established as a VoIP call, and, on a determination by the media gateways that a facsimile call is required, each media gateway autonomously transitions between its VoIP and FoIP call modes without the intervention of the media gateway controller.

Method of routing signals through communication networks

In a communication network, every subscriber has among all the calls he originates one or more call groups he frequently calls. To avoid repetitive call processing, the network allows for a more efficient call processing using the routing information of a previous call to the same subscriber. This allows a network element such as a switch to use existing routing information for the next same call instead of determining the routing information each time anew. The network and a method implemented therein identify the one or more call groups, store the routing information for these call groups, and use the stored routing information for the next same-call establishment.

IP based voice communication in a mobile communications system

An IP-based group communication feature in a mobile communication network is based on the pre-established logical connections established between a gateway node (GGSN) and members of a group in the mobile communication network. No separate call establishment procedures using VoIP signaling are used for connecting a user equipment (UE) logically to group(s), but the procedure is preferably based on the normal logical connection establishment signaling (e.g. PDP context creation) as used for data service. The UE implements a host supporting the IP multicasting, and the next IP layer peer for the UE host is located in the gateway node. The gateway node provides an IP interface towards an external multicast router so that the UE host looks like a normal IP host supporting IP multicasting. The IP-based voice traffic is mapped and transferred over pre-established connections between the gateway and the UEs of the specific group.

Using call establishment signaling to request data

A mobile computer system requests data by requesting the establishment of a voice connection to a voice server, such as, for example, by selecting a telephone number. The mobile computer system provides an identifier (e.g. caller identification information) that identifies the mobile computer system and a called number that represents data of interest to the mobile computer system. After receiving the identifier and the called number, the voice server may deny the request for establishment of the voice connection. The voice server identifies the data of interest, which may be stored at the voice server or at a data server associated with the voice server, based on the called number. The identifier is mapped to a data address associated with the mobile computer system and the data of interest is sent to the data address. The mobile computer system receives the data of interest over a data connection.
