System for displaying a notification window from completely transparent to intermediate level of opacity as a function of time to indicate an event has occurred

A method and apparatus for notifying a computer user of the occurrence of an event are provided. An indication is received that an event has occurred. In response to receiving the indication, a notification window is gradually displayed by varying the opacity of the window. When the event comprises the receipt of a new electronic mail message, the notification window includes a notification message indicating that the new electronic mail message has been received. If a predetermined period of time elapses without a selection of the new message notification window being received, the window is gradually removed. The new message notification window may be displayed above the displays provided by other executing applications.

Membrane filtered milk proteins varying in composition and functional attributes

A process is described for treating an approximately neutral fluid milk composition, including milk protein concentrate and milk plus added whey, by selecting an alkali, adjusting the pH upward, heating, cooling, selecting an acid, and adjusting the pH down before ultrafiltering and, in a more preferred process, thereafter diafiltering the treated composition. Selection of the appropriate alkali, pH values, temperatures, acid, and membrane filter porosity results in improved yields of retentate proteins having selected compositions with improved utility, including a more palatable flavor, a brod range of solution viscosities, an increase in the solubility of the dried retentates in cold water to nearly 100%, and an increase in the calcium content of the membrane filtered retentate by about 50% compared to a similar retentate from standard milk. Appropriate selection of processing conditions can result in at least one filter permeate with a protein composition enriched in alpha lactalbumin, a protein that is highly beneficial for human nutrition.

Method for preventing selected pixels in a background image from showing through corresponding pixels in a transparency layer

The present invention converts an image into a transparency, or “foreground image layer”, on which the readability of text and other detail is preserved after compositing with a background, while maintaining color information of broad areas of the image. In an embodiment, a matte is determined for the background image to reduce transparencies in the foreground layer, so as to prevent irrelevant parts of the background image from showing through. This is in distinction to only using the original foreground image data (prior to its transformation to a layer) to compute a matte (or mask, or alpha channel) to form a foreground layer.

Automatic opacity detection system for cortical cataract diagnosis

InactiveUS20110091084A1Reduce estimated effect of edgeReduce opacityImage enhancementImage analysisCapsular cataractRegion of interest
A method performed by a computer system for detecting opacity in an image of the lens of an eye. The method includes detecting a region of interest in a picture of the lens, and processing the region of interest to produce a modified image using an algorithm which emphasizes opacity associated with a cortical cataract relative to opacity caused by other types of opacity, such as opacity caused by posterior sub-capsular cataracts (PSC). The modified image may be used for grading the level of cortical opacity, by measuring, in the modified image, the proportion of opacity in at least one area of the region of interest.
