System for securing a suture to a needle in a swaged fashion

InactiveUS6877352B1Keep sterileMinimizing dexterity requiredShaping toolsSurgical needlesBiomedical engineering
A crimper having a crimping block and a crimping lever. The crimping block has a top surface, a first end, and an opposite second end. The first end provides receptacles which each allow a swaged needle having a needle hole end having a needle hole to be inserted therein. The second end has suture channels which allow a suture to be inserted into the crimping block such that the suture is guided toward the needle end hole. The top surface has a plurality of crimping openings which each expose one of the receptacles and the needle hole end therein. The crimping lever has a plurality of protrusions which are aligned with the crimping openings such that one of the projections engages the needle end and mechanically crimp the needle end to secure the suture therein. The needle may then be withdrawn from the receptacle with the suture secured therein.

Roll-To-Roll Electroplating for Photovoltaic Film Manufacturing

InactiveUS20080093221A1Reduce effective series resistance of deviceMinimize handlingCellsMaterial nanotechnologyIndiumElectrical battery
A roll to roll system for forming an absorber structure for solar cells on a flexible foil as the flexible foil is advanced through units of the system and by unwrapping from a supply spool and wrapping around a take-up spool. Surface of the flexible foil is first conditioned in a conditioning unit to form an activated surface. A precursor stack including copper, gallium and indium layers is electroplated onto the activated surface by utilizing separate electroplating units for each layers. The precursor layer is reacted with at least one of Se and S in an annealing unit of the system.

Dialysis on microchips using thin porous polymer membranes

Laser-induced phase-separation polymerization of a porous acrylate polymer is used for in-situ fabrication of dialysis membranes inside glass microchannels. A shaped 355 nm laser beam is used to produce a porous polymer membrane with a thickness of about 15 μm, which bonds to the glass microchannel and form a semi-permeable membrane. Differential permeation through a membrane formed with pentaerythritol triacrylate was observed and quantified by comparing the response of the membrane to fluorescein and fluorescently tagging 200 nm latex microspheres. Differential permeation was observed and quantified by comparing the response to rhodamine 560 and lactalbumin protein in a membrane formed with SPE-methylene bisacrylamide. The porous membranes illustrate the capability for the present technique to integrate sample cleanup into chip-based analysis systems.

Detecting a voice mail system answering a call

An apparatus and method are disclosed that enable a private branch exchange to determine that a voice mail system has answered a call, without some of the disadvantages in the prior art. The private branch exchange—or, generally-speaking, a data-processing system—infers that the voice mail system has answered a call by timing key events or by noting some of indications that are received from another system, or both. Subsequently, the private branch exchange drops the voice mail system from the call, thereby minimizing the non-enterprise voice mail system's handling of calls that are originated to an on-premises terminal.

Wall element for magnetically shielded room and magnetically shielded room

The invention relates to a wall element for a magnetically shielded room and to a magnetically shielded room. The wall element comprises at least one first layer (1) which is formed of metal plate having a high electrical conductivity, and at least two layers, a second layer (2) and a third layer (3), which consist of metal plates having a high magnetic permeability. The layers (1, 2, 3) are superimposed one on top of another in surface contact with each other without any separating air gaps, so that each first layer (1) having a high electrical conductivity lies between each second (2) and third layers (3) having a high permeability substantially in surface contact with the second and third layers, the layers together forming a compact structure in which the product (σ×μ) of electrical conductivity (σ) and permeability (μ) is maximized so as to minimize the penetration depth of magnetic interference.

Method for argon plasma induced ultraviolet light curing step for increasing silicon-containing photoresist selectivity

InactiveUS7160671B2Selectivity ratio is greatly improvedProfile control be improvedLiquid surface applicatorsSemiconductor/solid-state device manufacturingCross-linkKrypton
A method for increasing etching selectivity of a developed silicon-containing photoresist layer on a non-silicon containing photoresist layer on a substrate. The developed silicon-containing photoresist layer includes polymer chains containing silicon. Next, the developed silicon-containing photoresist layer and uncovered portions of the non-silicon containing photoresist layer are exposed to an ultraviolet (UV) light, where the UV light emanates from a UV generating agent, such as neon, xenon, helium, hydrogen, or krypton gas in an inert gas (e.g., argon, etc.) plasma. A top portion of the developed silicon-containing photoresist layer is then converted to a hardened layer, where the hardened layer is created by cross-linking the polymer chains containing silicon and the cross-linking is activated by the UV light. Next, an etch is performed on the uncovered portions of the non-silicon containing photoresist layer and the substrate using the hardened layer.

Automatic hydroponic cloning system

An automatic cloning apparatus is disclosed which comprises a housing having an interior divided into a plant compartment and a water compartment. The plant compartment has a plurality of porous net pockets adapted to allow plants to rest thereon and water to drain therethrough. Above the water compartment is a mixing area having a mist generator thereon. The mist generator is mounted to the housing and has a motor with a hollow tapered shaft extending downwardly therefrom into the water compartment. The shaft is tapered whereby when spinning rapidly, the combination of centripetal force on the water and the outwardly sloping inner surface of the tapered shaft forces water upwardly therein. A disk is mounted atop the open upper end of the tapered shaft and adapted to receive water therefrom. The disk throws the water off in a radial movement in small droplets in the mixing area and also forces air within the mixing area outwardly throughout the mixing area. This action mixes the air and the water within the mixing area and forces the resultant mixture through the cage to the plant compartment in a fine mist.
