Load Control Device for a Light-Emitting Diode Light Source

An LED driver for controlling the intensity of an LED light source includes a power converter circuit for generating a DC bus voltage, an LED drive circuit for receiving the bus voltage and controlling a load current through, and thus the intensity of, the LED light source, and a controller operatively coupled to the power converter circuit and the LED drive circuit. The LED drive circuit comprises a controllable-impedance circuit adapted to be coupled in series with the LED light source. The controller adjusts the magnitude of the bus voltage to a target bus voltage and generates a drive signal for controlling the controllable-impedance circuit. To adjust the intensity of the LED light source, the controller controls both the magnitude of the load current and the magnitude of the regulator voltage. The controller controls the magnitude of the regulator voltage by simultaneously maintaining the magnitude of the drive signal constant and adjusting the target bus voltage.

Method of programming a lighting preset from a radio-frequency remote control

The present invention provides a method of programming a preset intensity of a dimmer switch from a radio-frequency (RF) remote control. A user is able to adjust the intensity of the lighting load to a new intensity and subsequently press and hold a preset button on the remote control to program the new intensity as the preset intensity. The remote control transmits a wireless transmission to the dimmer switch, which immediately responds to the actuation of the preset button by controlling the intensity of the lighting load to an initial preset intensity. The dimmer switch then blinks a light-emitting diode representative of the new intensity to provide feedback that the dimmer switch is in the process of programming the preset intensity to the new intensity. Eventually, the dimmer switch stores the new intensity as the preset intensity and stops blinking the light-emitting diode.

System and method for controlling luminaires

The present invention provides a programmable lighting system comprising a plurality of light-emitting elements and a controller responsive to a hierarchically encoded data input stream. The controller determines and provides appropriate control signals for controlling the characteristics of the light generated by the plurality of light-emitting elements operatively coupled thereto. The data input stream may use a DMX512 or other network protocol and can be hierarchically encoded by varying the value of the START code of the data packets. When a DMX512 or other data packet with a NULL START code or “color” packet is received by the controller, the controller interprets the frames to be intensity control data wherein each frame can correspond to a particular light-emitting element or group of light-emitting elements. The color packet can provide data for the generation of a particular temporal color sequence or a temporal color sequence that is random or any other lighting sequence. When a DMX512 or other data packet with a non-NULL START code or “service” packet is received by the controller, the controller can interpret each START code value independently and can assign or modify one or more attributes of the controller, for example, the particular mode of operation, or an address or serial number may be assigned or modified based on the value of the START code.

Light source intensity control system and method

The light source comprises one or more first light-emitting elements for generating light having a first wavelength range and one or more second light-emitting elements for generating light having a second wavelength range. The first light-emitting elements and second light-emitting elements are responsive to separate control signals provided thereto. A control system receives a signal representative of the operating temperature from one or more sensing devices and determines first and second control signals based on the desired colour of light and the operating temperature. The light emitted by the first and second light-emitting elements as a result of the received first and second control signals can be blended to substantially obtain the desired colour of light. The desired colour of light generated can thus be substantially independent of junction temperature induced changes in the operating characteristics of the light-emitting elements.
