A closed system is a physical system that does not allow certain types of transfers (such as transfer of mass or energy transfer) in or out of the system. The specification of what types of transfers are excluded varies in the closed systems of physics, chemistry or engineering.

Closed system artificial intervertebral disc

An artificial intervertebral disc and disc nucleus are described herein having chambers and dampening members. The dampening members may be within or outside of the main body of the device. The chambers may be filled with a suitable liquid, gas, or both, and separated by valves to regulate flow of fluid between chambers, within a dampening member, between the main body and dampening member, or all of the above. Chambers may be filled with responsive hydrogels, EPAM, or other suitable materials, and the device may have activation plates or members, a strain gauge, a pressure sensor, or other means for detecting changes in the materials and / or triggering desired changes in the materials in order to mimic the behavior of a healthy native disc or disc nucleus. A control system may be in communication with the device for receiving feedback and delivering stimuli to initiate desired changes in the fluids or other materials. Membranes may be of variable permeability and may be metallized to ensure as low permeability as possible. Dampening members may be filled during manufacture with carbon dioxide or other suitable gas which may be in a supercritical state and allowed to return to ambient temperature and gaseous state or by other means. Methods of manufacture, delivery of the artificial disc and related structures, and methods of treatment are also described.

Multiple fluid closed system dispensing device

A dispensing device (1) with multi-arm tubing assembly (10) connected to a single source pumping means (12) draws and mixes multiple fluids from plurality of flexible walled sealed supply containers (50a,b) then expels the mixture (60) through nozzle (58) to a target surface (62). Dispensing device (1) provides a closed system whereby no venting occurs, rather supply containers (50a,b) contract in size equal to the volume of fluid expelled. Unstable fluids thus remain protected from exposure to outside air. Additionally, a new use of a repressurization device is disclosed for maintaining the potency of unstable fluids like hydrogen peroxide and a kit is provided which allows user to choose from various components and accessories as needed to suit their multi-chemical dispensing needs.

Positive flow valve

A closed system, spikeless, positive-flow valve device includes a body defining an internal cavity. At the proximal end of the body is an opening which is preferably sufficiently large to receive an ANSI standard tip of a medical implement. The valve includes a plastic, resilient silicon seal which fills the upper cavity and opening with an oval seal cap having a slit. The opening presses the oval seal cap to keep the slit closed in the decompressed state. The slit opens as the nose of the medical implement compresses the seal into the cavity and the seal cap is free from the opening. The housing also includes a fluid space which facilitates fluid flow between the medical implement and a catheter tip. The fluid space within the valve automatically and reversibly increases upon insertion of the medical implement into the cavity and decreases upon withdrawal of the medical implement, such that a positive flow from the valve toward the catheter tip is effected upon withdrawal of the medical implement, thereby preventing a flow of blood from a patient into the catheter when the medical implement is removed from the valve.

Wireless chat automatic status tracking

A technique and apparatus to provide status tracking of presence and / or location of a mobile, wireless device to a requesting entity even outside of a particular wireless system. This allows wireless service providers the ability to monitor and log changes in the status of mobile stations within and / or outside their networks. Embodiments are disclosed wherein presence and / or location information is provided to entities outside of a particular servicing wireless network using the mechanisms of call processing components of a mobile network (e.g., call setup procedures), and using standard mechanisms currently available to any appropriately conforming Mobile Switching Center (MSC) element. In one disclosed embodiment, a wireless chat tracking system is implemented which utilizes a change in mobile registration status to automatically notify a chat group system outside the wireless network of current status information activity regarding a relevant device, e.g., registration activity or inactivity timeout. In the wireless chat automatic status tracking system, a registration notification (REGNOT) message is either explicitly forwarded or copied to an external IP based application (e.g., to a mobile chat group system). The change in mobile registration is communicated via a suitable signaling link (e.g., SS7, TCP / IP, etc.) between a Home Location Register (HLR) and the chat group system. Therefore, instead of a conventionally closed system using SS7 messages, REGNOT messages are pushed out over TCP / IP connections to external applications (e.g., chat servers) to automatically notify the external system of the location of a particular user.

Apparatus and method for transcranial and nerve magnetic stimulation

An electromagnet coil comprising Litz wire windings and power leads without break or interruption is cooled by a perfluorinated liquid by sensible and phase change heat transfer in a closed system. The electromagnet coil may be housed in a pentagonal or hexagonal pressure vessel to allow high packing densities in an array or helmet configuration. The helmet is then lowered over a human cranium for transcranial electromagnetic stimulation. The Litz wire windings reduce the power and voltages required for operation, yet allow production of over 2 T of accurately directed magnetic pulses for direct nerve or neuron stimulation. The perfluorinated liquid maintains the temperature of the helmet to less than 35-40° C., ensuring a comfortable temperature device for a human test subject. A utility cable connects the helmet to an external cooling unit and an external power supply.

Closed System and Method for Atraumatic, Low Pressure, Continuous Harvesting, Processing, and Grafting of Lipoaspirate

A closed system for harvesting fat through liposuction, concentrating the aspirate so obtained, and then re-injecting the concentrated fat into a patient comprises as its main components a low pressure cannula having between about 7 to 12 side holes of about 1-2 mm by 2.0 to 4.0 mm, a spring loaded syringe holder with a helicoidal spring to apply a substantially constant pressure over the full excursion of the plunger, and a preferably flexible collection bag which is also preferably graduated, cylindrical over most of its body and funnel shaped at its bottom, all of which are connected through flexible tubings to a multi-port valve. The multi-port valve has two flutter / duck bill valves which restrict the fluid flow to a one way direction which effectively allows the syringe to be used to pump fat out of a patient and into a collection bag in a continuous manner. After the bags are centrifuged to concentrate the fat, the excess fluids are separated and the valve is re-connected to permit the syringe pump to reverse fluid flow to graft the concentrated fat back into the patient.

Cooling arrangements for integrated electric motor-inverters

In order to provide a modular arrangement, an inverter for an electric traction motor used to drive an automotive vehicle is positioned in proximity with the traction motor. The inverter is located within a compartment adjacent to one end of the electric traction motor and is cooled in a closed system by spraying a liquid coolant directly onto the inverter. The liquid coolant absorbs heat from the inverter and is cooled by a heat exchange arrangement comprising a reservoir with pipes carrying a second coolant from the radiator of the automotive vehicle. In a preferred embodiment, the coolant is collected from the inverter in an annular reservoir that is integral with the compartment containing the inverter. In accordance with one embodiment of the cooling arrangement, heat from the inverter vaporizes the liquid coolant by absorbing heat from the inverter during a phase change from a liquid to a vapor. The vaporized coolant is condensed by a circulating second coolant in pipes connected to the vehicle's radiator through a condenser that is preferably coaxial with the motor and the annular reservoir, which annular reservoir in the second embodiment collects overspray liquid coolant. In order to avoid degrading the inverter, the coolant is a dielectric fluid.
