66 results about "Acute confusion" patented technology

Confusion may result from drug side effects or from a relatively sudden brain dysfunction. Acute confusion is often called delirium (or "acute confusional state"), although delirium often includes a much broader array of disorders than simple confusion.

Method and system for assessing fall risk

A method and system for determining the fall risk of a patient is provided. The method includes the evaluation of a patient to determine whether the patient exhibits one or more intrinsic fall risk factors selected from a group consisting of confusion, depression, altered elimination, dizziness, male gender, antiepileptic / anticonvulsant prescriptions and benzodiazepine prescriptions. A specific point value is assigned to each of the intrinsic risk factors found to be exhibited by the patient. A mobility test is also performed on the patient to evaluate the patient's ability to rise from a seated position, and a specific mobility test point value is assigned to the patient based upon the patient's performance of the mobility test. Each intrinsic risk factor's specific point value is then summed together with the specific mobility test point value to achieve a total risk score, and the patient's fall risk is determined based on the total risk score. An intervention process may be developed for the patient based on the patient's fall risk.

Payment management system and method

A patient-centric, community-based system and method that professionally and effectively manages and services all patient-pay receivables associated with an individual's healthcare. The system permits patients to charge all out-of-pocket expenses for medical goods or services from different providers to one convenient, Patient Account, thereby reducing patient / responsible party confusion and permitting a single monthly payment. The Patient Accounts are “owned” pro rata by the healthcare providers in accordance with the respective amounts owed to each. The system employs a method for applying payments from the patient / responsible party and / or other payors to providers based on specific contractual arrangements, and real-time reporting of Patient Accounts status / activity via secure, proprietary Internet access. By centralizing account management functions, each of the providers is spared the costs of establishing his / her / its own discrete, separate and redundant patient account, the periodic mailing of invoices, the processing of payments, the dunning of past due accounts, and the application to Medicare and Medicaid for reimbursement.

System and method for measuring confusion among words in an adaptive speech recognition system

A system and method are proposed for measuring confusability or similarity between given entry pairs, including text string pairs and acoustic model pairs, in systems such as speech recognition and synthesis systems. A string edit distance (Levenshiten distance) can be applied to measure distance between any pair of text strings. It also can be used to calculate a confusion measurement between acoustic model pairs of different words and a model-driven method can be used to calculate a HMM model confusion matrix. This model-based approach can be efficiently calculated with low memory and low computational resources. Thus it can improve the speech recognition performance and models trained from text corpus.

Circuit and method for prioritization of hazardous condition messages for interconnected hazardous condition detectors

An interface circuit and method for use in interconnected hazardous condition detectors is provided. This circuit and method prioritizes the various hazardous condition alarms to ensure that only the highest priority or greatest threat alarm is sounded when such a condition is detected. In this way a lower priority alarm that may be sounding will be switched to a higher priority alarm so that all interconnected detectors that have the capability will sound the higher priority alarm. This will reduce occupant confusion during a hazardous condition. The circuit and method also provides the ability to silence all interconnected detectors except for those sensing the hazardous condition to allow the occupant to locate the triggering alarm, and there for the location of the sensed hazardous condition.

Semi-transparency in size-constrained user interface

The present invention provides a method that increases screen space of a computing device by using semi-transparent functional areas that overlap non-functional content areas on the screen. This method allows for relatively large functional targets on the screen—thus mitigating the usability problems associated with tiny buttons and other images—while also allowing the underlying content on the screen to be clearly visible. A main design feature of this invention is that two functional areas are never allowed to overlap. An overlap condition would cause user confusion as to which layer is active. Instead, the interface is designed to foreground functionality in all instances.

Adaptive place-pitch ranking procedure for optimizing performance of a multi-channel neural stimulator

InactiveUS7493170B1Short timeElectrotherapyEar treatmentMonopolar stimulationCochlear implantation
An adaptive place-pitch ranking procedure for use with a cochlear implant or other neural stimulation system provides a systematic method for quantifying the magnitude and direction of errors along the place-pitch continuum. The method may be conducted and completed in a relatively short period of time. In use, the implant user or listener is asked to rank the percepts obtained after a sequential presentation of monopolar stimulation pulses are applied to a selected spatially-defined electrode pair. Should the patient's judgment of pitch order be correct for all applied interrogations, then no further testing involving the tested electrode pair (two electrode contacts) is undertaken. However, should there be errors in the place-pitch ranking, which errors evidence perceptual place-confusions, then a search is undertaken for the spread of the perceptual confusion by separating the target channel and competing channel by one electrode contact at a time. This search for the spread of confusion continues until no errors are made in all directions. Identified channels wherein pitch confusion exists may be deselected (not used) during normal operation of the cochlear implant.

Hotel in-room safe automated control and communication system

An in-room safe monitoring, billing and tamper warning system that uses short range radio signals to pass the information to the internet, telephone system or any other Building Wide Communication Network (BCN). Attached to this BCN are the hotel's main computers used for security and billing. Thus the hotel staff can be informed of both usage and receive theft warning alarm messages through their regular computer network. The unique feature of this system is that data can be sent from any location in the room wirelessly throughout the room. A different code is associated with each and every safe, so that if the signal penetrates to the next room there will be no confusion. Once the signal reaches the wall, it is picked up by a data receiver and converted into the BCN format of choice for that building. Thus local short range radio communication can be used for building wide coverage in a huge hotel.

Automatic methods for focus and astigmatism corrections in charged-particle beam instrument

Automatic methods for focus and astigmatism corrections in a charged-particle beam instrument find an amount of excitation of the objective lens that provides the position of a circle of least confusion and can perform accurate automatic corrections of focus and astigmatism. The edge components of the original image along the X- and Y-directions are extracted separately, using respective filters. Noise reduction and normalization of numerical values are performed for each of the resulting two sets of data. Two-dimensional matrices of numerical values indicating the edge components in the X- and Y-directions, respectively, are found independently. The sums of the elements of the matrices are taken as focus evaluation values of the original image in the X- and Y-directions, respectively.

Separation of Components and Characters in Chinese Text Input

Components and characters are separated in a user interface for stroke based input of Chinese characters. A user enters a stroke sequence, and matching components and characters are separately displayed in separate selection lists. When the user selects a component, the character selection list is updated to only display characters that contain that component. This input methodology can be implemented on mobile phones, as well as other computing devices such as personal digital assistants. More characters are visible in the character selection list, which aids all users. Of further benefit to those who do use components, more components are displayed as components and characters do not need to share selection list space. Furthermore, separating components and characters reduces confusion between characters and components that look similar.

Color vision deficiency screening test resistant to display calibration errors

InactiveUS20050036112A1Eye diagnosticsAcute confusionDeuteranopia
A method for testing a plurality of regions in a color space to identify any of, or a subcombination of, the following color vision deficiencies: protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia, and related anomalies. A set of distractor colors is distributed across a region of color space such that the confusion line through a single target color intersects approximately the middle of the set. The distractor set spans a region extending in both chromaticity and luminance, which provides leeway for display errors since the confusion line will intersect the set even if colors do not render exactly as specified, and color deficient observers would still not be able to identify the target. A web-based implementation enables remote testing of subjects.
