Methods and algorithms for cell enumeration in a low-cost cytometer

The enumeration of cells in fluids by flow cytometry is widely used across many disciplines such as assessment of leukocyte subsets in different bodily fluids or of bacterial contamination in environmental samples, food products and bodily fluids. For many applications the cost, size and complexity of the instruments prevents wider use, for example, CD4 analysis in HIV monitoring in resource-poor countries. The novel device, methods and algorithms disclosed herein largely overcome these limitations. Briefly, all cells in a biological sample are fluorescently labeled, but only the target cells are also magnetically labeled. In addition, non-magnetically labeled cells are imaged for viability in a modified slide configuration. The labeled sample, in a chamber or cuvet, is placed between two wedge-shaped magnets to selectively move the magnetically labeled cells to the observation surface of the cuvet. An LED illuminates the cells and a CCD camera captures the images of the fluorescent light emitted by the target cells. Image analysis performed with a novel algorithm provides a count of the cells on the surface that can be related to the target cell concentration of the original sample. The compact cytometer system provides a rugged, affordable and easy-to-use technique, which can be used in remote locations.

Supplemental Vapor Fuel Injection System for Internal Combustion Engines

A supplemental vapor fuel injection system for internal combustion engines capable of utilizing numerous supplemental vapor type fuels such as propane, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid natural gas (LNG), butane, ammonia, biogas, hydrogen, ammonia, and Hythane®. The system includes a vaporizer / pressure regulator that provides pressure regulated vapor fuel to two specially designed vapor fuel injectors and a controller unit capable of real-time control of the vapor fuel injectors. The injectors meter precise amounts of vapor fuel into a manifold that combines the vapor for delivery to a directional nozzle located in an airstream of the diesel engine.

Bearing monitoring method

A method for monitoring a bearing is disclosed. The method involves positioning a non-contacting bearing isolator adjacent a bearing on a piece of rotating equipment so that at least one operating parameter of said bearing is communicated to said bearing isolator; and, positioning an energy detector within range of said bearing isolator so that said energy detector is able to monitor said at least one operating parameter of said bearing by detecting at least one operating parameter of said bearing isolator.

An ink supply system in which gas is promptly and smoothly discharged without having a complex structure. The ink supply system includes a hermetically-sealed structure communicating with a liquid-using section, a liquid accommodating section having a liquid storage adapted to store liquid, the liquid accomodating section including a negative pressure generation means, and a plurality of communication paths, including first and second communication paths, that facilitates communication between the liquid chamber and the liquid accommodating section. Each of the first and second communication paths includes a liquid chamber side opening extending into the liquid chamber and a liquid accommodating section side opening extending into the liquid accommodating section. The liquid chamber side opening of the first communication path extends substantially further into the liquid chamber than the liquid chamber side opening of the second communication path, and the liquid accommodating section side opening of the second communication path extends substantially further into the liquid accommodating section than the liquid accommodating section side opening of the first communication path.

Compact vibrator and seismic monitoring or prospecting method using such a vibrator

Compact vibrator for emitting elastic waves in a material medium such as the subsoil. The vibrator comprises a baseplate (3) intended to be coupled in operation with a surface of this medium, an inertia mass (5) and at least a pair of electromechanical transducers (1, 2) comprising each one or more pillars (A, B) made for example of a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive material. Pillars (A) of first transducer (1) are interposed between baseplate (3) and a relay plate (4). Pillars (B) of the second transducer are interposed between relay plate (4) and inertia mass (5), on the same side of relay plate (4) as pillars (A) preferably, so that inertia mass (5) is positioned in the vicinity of baseplate (3), which contributes to the compactness and to the stability of the vibrator that can therefore be used on slightly sloping surfaces. An excitation generator (6) comprising phase shifting means (7) respectively applies to transducers (A, B) phase-shifted signals that are amplitude-modulable, so that their vibrations combine. The vibrator can be applied: notably for equipping an underground zone under development with periodic seismic monitoring means or for carrying out seismic prospecting operations.
