Methods of Discretizing data captured at event data recorders

Exception event recorders and analysis systems include: vehicle mounted sensors arranged as a vehicle event recorder to capture both discrete and non-discrete data; a discretization facility; a database; and an analysis server all coupled together as a computer network. Motor vehicles with video cameras and onboard diagnostic systems capture data when the vehicle is involved in a crash or other anomaly (an ‘event’). In station where interpretation of non-discrete data is rendered, i.e. a discretization facility, captured data is used as a basis for production of supplemental discrete data to further characterize the event. Such interpreted data is joined to captured data and inserted into a database in a structure which is searchable and which supports logical or mathematical analysis by automated machines. A coupled analysis server is arranged to test stored data for prescribed conditions and upon finding such, to initiate further actions appropriate for the detected condition.

Methods and algorithms for cell enumeration in low-cost cytometer

The enumeration of cells in fluids by flow cytometry is widely used across many disciplines such as assessment of leukocyte subsets in different bodily fluids or of bacterial contamination in environmental samples, food products and bodily fluids. For many applications the cost, size and complexity of the instruments prevents wider use, for example, CD4 analysis in HIV monitoring in resource-poor countries. The novel device, methods and algorithms disclosed herein largely overcome these limitations. Briefly, all cells in a biological sample are fluorescently labeled, but only the target cells are also magnetically labeled. The labeled sample, in a chamber or cuvet, is placed between two wedge-shaped magnets to selectively move the magnetically labeled cells to the observation surface of the cuvet. An LED illuminates the cells and a CCD camera captures the images of the fluorescent light emitted by the target cells. Image analysis performed with a novel algorithm provides a count of the cells on the surface that can be related to the target cell concentration of the original sample. The compact cytometer system provides a rugged, affordable and easy-to-use technique, which can be used in remote locations.

Automated discovery of devices in large utility monitoring systems

An auto-discovery algorithm attempts a scattered-read of register addresses of a device in a utility monitoring system whose identity is unknown to a computer system. If the scattered read is successful, and data from the device includes a device ID code that is matched against a lookup table of devices. If unsuccessful, the algorithm attempts a block-read, and if unsuccessful, iteratively checks each register against the lookup table to determine whether a match exists until either one is found or the device reports an illegal data address exception, whereupon the algorithm stops attempting to read from subsequent addresses. The algorithm analyzes the response from the communications driver of the computer system to determine whether the response is valid, and if not, what type of exception is reported. If a timeout occurs, the algorithm flags the device for a later retry scan, and moves on to attempt to discover the next device.
