Apparatus and method for rapid reliable electrothermal tissue fusion and simultaneous cutting

Pieces of tissue are fused together and simultaneously cut by compressing the pieces together at an interface, delivering an impulse of electrical power which is converted into sufficient thermal energy to fuse the pieces together at the interface and simultaneously cut the fused tissue pieces along a well-defined linear path. The impulse, and the fusion and the simultaneous cutting, occur within a preferable time of 1.5-2.0 seconds but no greater than 4.0 seconds. The temperature of the thermal energy is regulated between 220° C.-320° C. The force applied on the tissue pieces is sufficient to fuse the tissue at the interface followed by further compression to cut the fused tissue along the linear path as a result of the thermal energy and a zero distance gap between jaws which compress the tissue pieces. The jaws have smooth working surfaces with an Ra of 0.15 or less microns up to 0.40 microns.

Connector

Locking members installed in a housing of a connector each include a first piece having at one end an engaging portion to engage the anchoring portion formed in a flexible printed circuit board, a pressure receiving portion at the other end to be urged by a pivoting member, and a projection inwardly extending from the pressure receiving portion; a second piece having at one end a connection portion connected to a substrate; and a jointing fulcrum portion connecting the first and second pieces. When the engaging portions of the locking members engage the anchoring portions of the circuit board, the second pieces are void of parts facing to the engaging portions. The housing includes notches at positions corresponding to the locking members. The connector achieves further reduced overall height and stable holding force for the circuit board even with less conductors without failed connection.

Enhanced module kick-out spring mechanism for removable small form factor optical transceivers

A spring-to-spring engagement of a kick-out spring and a secondary spring is disposed intermediate a structure supporting an electrical connector and an insertable and latchable electronic module or the like to enhance the disconnection and ejection of the module from the connector to which the module is connected. The spring-to-spring engagement insures both that adequate spring force is stored upon insertion and connection of the module and that disconnection and ejection forces are applied to the module. The forces are applied over a sufficient distance to fully displace the module from its latched position to its position of disconnection from the connectors and still provide spring force travel of the module to eject at least partially the module from the receiver or port into which the module was inserted and connected. A side benefit of the arrangement is that a high force is exerted on the module once it is unlatched for removal, and this high force will displace the module adequately to insure that the latch of the module does not relatch and to prevent removal of the module.

Electrostatic actuator

An electrostatic actuator includes a substrate upon which substantially U-shaped support beams are arranged such that a movable element is displaceable in the Y-axis direction. Then, the movable element is displaced from an initial position to a switching position by an electrostatic force between electrodes. When the movable element is at the initial position, the support beams are configured such that the arm portions of the support beams are not parallel to each other and, when the movable element is displaced by a large amount to the vicinity of the switching position, the arm portions are extended in the X-axis direction so as to be substantially parallel to each other. Thus, since the spring constant in the X-axis direction of the support beams is increased, transverse locational deviations when the movable element is displaced and short-circuiting by the deviations are prevented and, as a result, the movable element can be stably displaced by a large amount.

Method and apparatus for modifying distance from a brachytherapy radiation source to sensitive anatomical structures

A balloon brachytherapy applicator has either a single or double chambers, with the capability of “blistering” outwardly at a specified area on one side of the balloon. This is useful to move sensitive tissue, such as skin or bone, farther away from a radiation source within a source guide inside the balloon. In one case a secondary balloon or secondary compartment is formed on the primary balloon, and is separately inflatable so as to allow blistering as desired when needed. In another form the balloon comprises a single chamber, primarily of inelastic or fairly rigidly elastic wall material, but with a “window” or area in which the balloon wall is elastic, or substantially more elastic than the main balloon wall, so that inflation of the balloon up to a certain point forms a substantially regular balloon shape (which may be approximately spherical), and the addition of further pressure will blister out the elastic area to increase the distance between the shaft and the sensitive tissue in a desired orientation of the balloon.
