Energy management of household appliances

An appliance for conditioning air of a room comprises one or more power consuming features / functions including a temperature controlling element for one of heating and cooling air. A controller is operatively connected to the one or more power consuming features / functions. The controller is configured to receive and process a signal indicative of a utility state. The controller operates the appliance in one of a plurality of operating modes, including at least a normal operating mode and an energy savings mode in response to the received signal. The controller is configured to at least one of selectively adjust and deactivate at least one of the one or more power consuming features / functions to reduce power consumption of the appliance in the energy savings mode.

Nanofiltration process for enhanced brine recovery and sulfate removal

In a nanofiltration system for removing sulfate impurity from an aqueous brine stream and for recovering the brine, introducing a dilution stream upstream of the feed stream inlet of a nanofiltration module in the system dilutes the feed stream. This increases the amount of brine salt and water obtained in the permeate stream without substantially diluting the concentration of sulfate in the pass stream and hence results in enhanced recovery of brine while efficiently removing sulfate impurity. The system and process is especially suitable for recovering brine and removing sulfate impurity from a brine stream in a brine electrolysis plant. In a conventional system, the heat exchanger typically used to cool the feed stream can be omitted if the dilution stream is provided at a temperature suitably lower than that of the feed stream.

Method of and apparatus for making packets for arrays of discrete commodities

A cigarette packing machine has a first drive normally transmitting motion to packing units which are employed to advance a series of arrays of cigarettes or other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry and to confine each array in a discrete packet by providing each of successive arrays of the series with one or more envelopes, labels and the like. The first drive is decelerated and brought to a halt in the event of malfunctioning of one or more packing units of the machine and / or for other reasons, and this initiates or prevents an interruption of operation of at least one second drive which transmits motion to one or more packing units during deceleration and / or during a period following stoppage of the first drive. The second drive(s) causes or cause the respective packing unit(s) to complete operations which, if not carried out prior to restarting of the first drive, would entail the making of numerous defective packets.

Safe incineration of explosive air mixtures

An explosive gas incinerator system comprises a fume source inlet for receiving a process exhaust with a volatile material that is explosive when its concentration exceeds a lower explosive limit (LEL). A source flowmeter measures the volume of process exhaust being input. A temperature sensor measures the temperature of the process exhaust. A motorized damper is used for diluting the process exhaust with an ambient air input to produce a damper outflow with an explosive concentration less than the LEL. A damper flowmeter measures the total mixture volume of the process exhaust and ambient air input in the damper outflow. Another temperature sensor measures the temperature of the damper outflow. A gas monitor measures the concentration of volatile material in the damper outflow. An oxidizer burns the damper outflow in a flame to produce a cleaner exhaust, and a fan forces gas flows through the oxidizer. A system controller is connected to receive measurement data from the flowmeters, gas monitor, and temperature sensors, and is connected to control the motorized damper to maintain the damper outflow into the oxidizer below the corresponding LEL of the volatile material. Operator errors and attempts at sabotage can be detected and controlled.

Interference canceller tap sharing in a communications transceiver

A novel mechanism for sharing filter taps across a plurality of interference cancellers. Each interference canceller may be directed to impairment, such as Ethernet impairments, including Ethernet 1000Base-T impairments. Various interference impairments include echo cancellation, NEXT cancellation and / or other interference detection or cancellation, etc. The hardware requirements of the interference impairment cancellers are reduced by sharing filter taps among the cancellers. In a first embodiment, the taps from a unified filter tap bank are shared across all the interference impairment cancellers for all four channels and over all ports. In a second embodiment, a portion of the taps of each filter are shared wherein each canceller comprises a fixed filter tap portion and a shared filter tap portion. A tap allocation algorithm assigns taps to those cancellers that need them the most. A canceller configuration is selected that yields maximal interference mitigation and the taps are allocated accordingly.

Methods for calculating floating-point operands and apparatuses using the same

The invention introduces a method for calculating floating-point operands, which contains at least the following steps: receiving an FP (floating-point) operand in a first format from a source register, wherein the first format is one of a group of first formats of different kinds; converting the FP operand in the first format into an FP operand in a second format; generating a calculation result in the second format by calculating the FP operand in the second format; converting the calculation result in the second format into a calculation result in the first format; and writing-back the calculation result of the first format.

Method and apparatus for producing sized paper of board

A method and assembly is disclosed for manufacturing a sized web of paper or paperboard, the method comprising the steps of first forming the web at a headbox (1) from a stock comprising at least water and fiber, then pressing the web for water drainage, and finally drying the web by heating. Size furnish is added to the web so that at least a portion of the overall amount of size is added to the web prior to initiating the drying of the web by heating, and at least a portion of the overall amount of size is applied to the web after initiating the drying of the web.
