A novel and improved method of applying adhesive to one side of a running web of wrapping material for a rod-like filler of filter material for tobacco smoke includes directing toward the one side of the web a stream of adhesive which issues from an open-and-shut orifice of a nozzle, and employing one or more jets of compressed air to vary the direction of flow of the stream so that the adhesive coats one marginal portion as well as the adjacent portion of the major central part of the one side and forms at least one non-linear layer. Once the thus treated web is draped around the filler, the adhesive bonds the two marginal portions of the converted web to each other and simultaneously bonds the central part of the web to the filler.

Nanofiltration process for enhanced brine recovery and sulfate removal

In a nanofiltration system for removing sulfate impurity from an aqueous brine stream and for recovering the brine, introducing a dilution stream upstream of the feed stream inlet of a nanofiltration module in the system dilutes the feed stream. This increases the amount of brine salt and water obtained in the permeate stream without substantially diluting the concentration of sulfate in the pass stream and hence results in enhanced recovery of brine while efficiently removing sulfate impurity. The system and process is especially suitable for recovering brine and removing sulfate impurity from a brine stream in a brine electrolysis plant. In a conventional system, the heat exchanger typically used to cool the feed stream can be omitted if the dilution stream is provided at a temperature suitably lower than that of the feed stream.

Method and apparatus for matching web service in applications using a data object exchange protocol

Techniques for matching services of a first server with a second server include storing for a translator process transformation rules. The transformation rules transform between hierarchical elements of messages formatted for the first server and hierarchical elements of messages formatted for the second server. When a first message formatted for a particular server of the first server and the second server is received at the translator process, it is determined whether a first element in the first message is associated, in a cache of elements already transformed, with a second element for a second message formatted for a different server. If it is determined that the first element is not associated with the second element in the cache, then the second element is generated using a first rule of the transformation rules. The cache saves substantial processing in messages formatted with a markup language.

Method of and apparatus for making packets for arrays of discrete commodities

A cigarette packing machine has a first drive normally transmitting motion to packing units which are employed to advance a series of arrays of cigarettes or other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry and to confine each array in a discrete packet by providing each of successive arrays of the series with one or more envelopes, labels and the like. The first drive is decelerated and brought to a halt in the event of malfunctioning of one or more packing units of the machine and / or for other reasons, and this initiates or prevents an interruption of operation of at least one second drive which transmits motion to one or more packing units during deceleration and / or during a period following stoppage of the first drive. The second drive(s) causes or cause the respective packing unit(s) to complete operations which, if not carried out prior to restarting of the first drive, would entail the making of numerous defective packets.

Safe incineration of explosive air mixtures

An explosive gas incinerator system comprises a fume source inlet for receiving a process exhaust with a volatile material that is explosive when its concentration exceeds a lower explosive limit (LEL). A source flowmeter measures the volume of process exhaust being input. A temperature sensor measures the temperature of the process exhaust. A motorized damper is used for diluting the process exhaust with an ambient air input to produce a damper outflow with an explosive concentration less than the LEL. A damper flowmeter measures the total mixture volume of the process exhaust and ambient air input in the damper outflow. Another temperature sensor measures the temperature of the damper outflow. A gas monitor measures the concentration of volatile material in the damper outflow. An oxidizer burns the damper outflow in a flame to produce a cleaner exhaust, and a fan forces gas flows through the oxidizer. A system controller is connected to receive measurement data from the flowmeters, gas monitor, and temperature sensors, and is connected to control the motorized damper to maintain the damper outflow into the oxidizer below the corresponding LEL of the volatile material. Operator errors and attempts at sabotage can be detected and controlled.

Reflective Arrayed Waveguide Grating

This invention discloses a "reflective arrayed waveguide grating," (RAWG) for demultiplexing a multiplexed optical signal into its component wavelengths and for multiplexing n optical signals into a multiplexed signal. The present invention found that a single slab can be used for coupling the signal in and for focusing the signal out of the array of waveguide that functions as a grating; and a single external fiber array interface containing plurality of fibers can be used for both inputting the signal in and for outputting the signal from the RAWG. Advantageously, this method reduces the chip size and on-chip insertion loss by eliminating a slab and using 50% shorter waveguides in the array allowing significant savings of the silicon real estate. The smaller chip size increases the reliability of the device significantly and almost doubles the yield of chips per wafer. Additionally, used as a building block, these chips can enable further functionality enhancement via tiers of monolithic triple-phase integration.

Interference canceller tap sharing in a communications transceiver

A novel mechanism for sharing filter taps across a plurality of interference cancellers. Each interference canceller may be directed to impairment, such as Ethernet impairments, including Ethernet 1000Base-T impairments. Various interference impairments include echo cancellation, NEXT cancellation and / or other interference detection or cancellation, etc. The hardware requirements of the interference impairment cancellers are reduced by sharing filter taps among the cancellers. In a first embodiment, the taps from a unified filter tap bank are shared across all the interference impairment cancellers for all four channels and over all ports. In a second embodiment, a portion of the taps of each filter are shared wherein each canceller comprises a fixed filter tap portion and a shared filter tap portion. A tap allocation algorithm assigns taps to those cancellers that need them the most. A canceller configuration is selected that yields maximal interference mitigation and the taps are allocated accordingly.

Systems and methods for extracting coherent correlation data

An apparatus and method allow receivers to quickly acquire a pseudorandom noise signal. A receiver advantageously detects frequency shifts using a compact parallel process hardware implementation of a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The simultaneous detection of multiple frequencies allows the receiver to search the frequency range of the transmitted signal in larger increments of frequency, thereby increasing the speed of acquisition. One receiver does not use coherent integration before computation of the transform and advantageously maintains a flat frequency response. The flat frequency response of the DFT circuit enables searching of multiple frequency offsets without CPU intensive processing to compensate for frequency response variations. A receiver can include a Doppler correction circuit, which permits correlation data with frequency shift in the code to be non-coherently integrated among relatively fewer addresses or tap positions in memory.

System for synthesizing sounds from prototypes

A system is presented for generation of output sounds having psychoacoustic qualities comparable to input sound or sounds. Short term and intermediate term features are computed for each input sound, sound components are clustered, filtered, and scored; and a prediction learning system is trained on the probabilities of classes of regions over time. A decoder can make use of this information to generate outputs that sound similar to, but not the same as, the input sound or sounds. The method and apparatus can be operated with no special training.

A large size aerosol container (10′) dispensing a fluent material. A generally cylindrical can body (12′) is fabricated from a steel sheet and has a relatively thin sidewall thickness of between 0.004 inches and 0.010 inches depending upon the weight of the steel sheet from which the container is made. The can body has beads (30) formed at regular intervals substantially its length. The beading adds structural strength to the container so the container is not damaged by handling during manufacture of the container, will not collapse during vacuum filling, and cannot be crushed by hand before the container is filled. The container can withstand a vacuum of at least 23 inches of Mercury without collapsing. A valve assembly (14′) includes a spray valve (20) for dispensing the fluent material stored in the container. The container is filled with the fluent material and a propellant stored in the container under pressure.
