The vehicle is equipped with a direction control system which actively performs direction control. The vehicle moves inside a lane of a predetermined track which is predetermined on the basis of detected lane parameters. According to the invention, the direction control system respectively summates the predetermined track or detects at least one specified track parameter as a track real value and compares the track real value with at least one predetermined track reference value. When there is a deviation between the track real value and the track reference value, the predetermined track is changed to make the wheels of the vehicle basically travel inside the tracks (2,3) of the lane. An independent claim is also included for a tracking system for executing the method.
