This catalyst comprises a support comprising portions of zirconia having a tetragonal form and portions of alumina, and a sulfureous component and, if necessary, a Group 8, 9 or 10 metal component both being supported on the support, and has a specific surface area of 150 m2 / g or above. The catalyst can be prepared by kneading aluminum hydroxide, zirconium hydroxide and a sulfureous compound, shaping the kneaded mixture, calcining the shaped material at such a temperature as to form tetragonal zirconia and, if necessary, supporting a Group 8, 9 or 10 metal component on the calcined material and calcining the resulting molding at 300 to 700° C.

Liquid crystal photonic devices and microcavities filled with liquid crystal materials are becoming increasingly popular. These devices often present a challenge when it comes to creating a robust alignment layer in pre-assembled cells. Previous research on photo-definable alignment layers has shown that they have limited stability, particularly against subsequent light exposure. A method of infusing a dye into a microcavity to produce an effective photo-definable alignment layer is described, along with a method of utilizing a pre-polymer infused into the microcavity mixed with the liquid crystal to provide photostability. In this method, the polymer layer, formed under optical irradiation of liquid crystal cells, is effectively localized to a thin region near the substrate surface and thus provides a significant improvement in the photostability of the liquid crystal alignment. This versatile alignment layer method, which can be used in microcavities to displays, offers significant promise for new photonics applications.

Disclosed embodiments describe a volar plate generally for use treating distal volar fractures. The volar plate is designed in accordance with anatomical features and is generally Y-shaped, having a wider distal head portion that tapers to a narrower proximal body portion. A plurality of holes in the distal head of the volar plate allow for fixation means to fix the position of bone fragments with respect to the volar plate. The plurality of holes in the distal head basically form two substantially non-linear rows, with the distal row generally curving inward proximally and the proximal row generally curving outward distally such that the fixation means inserted through the holes generally converge.
