Fault-tolerance framework for an extendable computer architecture

A computer system having a fault-tolerance framework in an extendable computer architecture. The computer system is formed of clusters of nodes where each node includes computer hardware and operating system software for executing jobs that implement the services provided by the computer system. Jobs are distributed across the nodes under control of a hierarchical resource management unit. The resource management unit includes hierarchical monitors that monitor and control the allocation of resources. In the resource management unit, a first monitor, at a first level, monitors and allocates elements below the first level. A second monitor, at a second level, monitors and allocates elements at the first level. The framework is extendable from the hierarchy of the first and second levels to higher levels where monitors at higher levels each monitor lower level elements in a hierarchical tree. If a failure occurs down the hierarchy, a higher level monitor restarts an element at a lower level. If a failure occurs up the hierarchy, a lower level monitor restarts an element at a higher level. Each of the monitors includes termination code that causes an element to terminate if duplicate elements have been restarted for the same job. The termination code in one embodiment includes suicide code whereby an element will self-destruct when the element detects that it is an unnecessary duplicate element.

Streaming video network system

ActiveUS20070050828A1Improve operating room and staff and surgeon efficiencyIncreased level of controlData processing applicationsTelevision conference systemsAuthorizationNetworked system
A distributed, digital, network-based, streaming video solution allows users to view live streaming digital video from multiple video sources in multiple operating rooms at any location connected to a network. One or more video sources in an operating room are connected to a streaming video encoder capable of converting the video to a network packet stream. Once the digital video stream is available on the network, it may be accessed and routed through the use of a streaming video control server. The streaming video control server is responsible for user authentication and authorization and web page access for remote viewing and video source selection by users. The control server also provides audit logging services, operating room selection and overall system resource allocation. The video control server also provides a network-based remote control interface, which enables other systems to communicate on the streaming video network, and allows for remote control of visualization from an integrated operating room control system, and provides the ability for one operating room to look into other operating rooms.

Pressure support system and method

A pressure generating system and method for generating a flow of fluid at a pressure above atmospheric pressure. The system includes a pressure generator and a pressure regulator downstream of the pressure generator. The system monitors a characteristic associated with the pressure regulator, the fluid flow downstream of the pressure regulator to the patient, the fluid flow upstream of the pressure regulator, the fluid flow exhausted from the pressure regulator, or any combination thereof. A controller coupled to the pressure generator controls an operating speed of the pressure generator based on the monitored characteristic(s) so that the output of the pressure generator is only kept as high as needed to provide the desired pressure to the patient.
