Voice-activated call placement systems and methods

System and method for deriving call routing information utilizing a network control data base system and voice recognition for matching spoken word sound patterns to routing numbers needed to set up calls. Public access is provided to a common database via a common access number or code. Terminating parties sponsor the call and originating parties need not be pre-subscribed to use the service. The common access number is used to initiate or trigger the service. The system advantageously operates under the direction of a service control point, which combines technologies for switching, interactive voice response, and voice recognition with the data base to automate the processes of assisting callers in making calls for which they do not know the phone number. Usage information is gathered on completed calls to each terminating party for billing. Three alternative deployments in the U.S. telephone network are described, and vary based on the location of the service control points or intelligent processors and the degree of intelligence within the network.

Signal modulation method resistant to echo reflections and frequency offsets

A method of modulating communications signals, such as optical fiber, wired electronic, or wireless signals in a manner that facilitates automatic correction for the signal distortion effects of echoes and frequency shifts, while still allowing high rates of data transmission. Data symbols intended for transmission are distributed into N×N matrices, and used to weigh or modulate a family of cyclically time shifted and cyclically frequency shifted waveforms. Although these waveforms may then be distorted during transmission, their basic cyclic time and frequency repeating structure facilitates use of improved receivers with deconvolution devices that can utilize the repeating patterns to correct for these distortions. The various waveforms may be sent in N time blocks at various time spacing and frequency spacing combinations in a manner that can allow interleaving of blocks from different transmitters. Applications to channel sounding / characterization, system optimization, and also radar are also discussed.

Methods and apparatus for implementing and using an in-band rate indicator

Downlink traffic channel data rate options and methods of indicating to a wireless terminal a utilized downlink data rate option are described. The downlink traffic channel rate option for a segment is conveyed using an assignment signal and / or a block in the downlink traffic channel segment which is not used for user data. Downlink segment assignment signals in some implementations allocate fewer bits for rate option indication than are required to uniquely identify each option. In some implementations low rate options, e.g., using QPSK, are uniquely identified via assignment signals. Higher rate options, e.g., using QAM16 modulation, are conveyed via the distinct information block in the downlink traffic segment using a first coding / modulation method. Still higher rate options, e.g., using QAM16, QAM64, or QAM256, are conveyed via the information block in the segment using a second coding / modulation method which is applied to the rate option information.

Establishing telephone calls at specified times

Web-based telephony applications have recently been developed whereby a user is able to access a web-site and click on links or buttons in order to establish a voice over internet protocol telephone call from for example, his or her PC phone, to another user at another telephone terminal (PC phone or other suitable type of telephone). By enabling a web-based telephony application to receive URIs containing time information it is possible to enable telephone calls (including conference calls) to be initiated automatically at specified times or for feature keys on a user's telephone terminal to be programmed such that when activated at a particular time, a specified telephone call is initiated. In addition, URIs comprising time information may be used to set up "follow-me" functionality whereby all calls to a particular user are directed to different pre-specified directory numbers depending on the time of day. In another example, URIs comprising time information are used to route calls to contact-center agents in order to reduce the burden on contact center routing applications. URIs comprising time information are also advantageously used to communicate information to other entities.

Techniques for generating a trace stream for a data processing apparatus

Trace circuitry, and a method of operating such trace circuitry, are provided for generating a trace stream indicative of activities of monitored circuitry of a data processing apparatus. The monitored circuitry produces data elements indicative of those activities, and the trace circuitry comprises trace element generation circuitry which is responsive to at least some of the data elements produced by the monitored circuitry to generate trace elements representative of those data-elements, with the trace elements generated being dependent on a selected trace mode of operation of the trace circuitry. Compression circuitry is then arranged to apply an encoding operation to a sequence of trace elements in order to produce a packet whose bit pattern represents the sequence of trace elements, and to cause that packet to be output in the trace stream, the encoding operation applied being dependent on a current compression scheme associated with the compression circuitry. Whilst in the selected trace mode of operation, the compression circuitry is responsive to a compression change stimulus to change the current compression scheme from a first compression scheme to a second compression scheme whose bit pattern encoding space overlaps the bit pattern encoding space of the first compression scheme, such that following the change of compression scheme any further packets produced whilst in the selected trace mode of operation are produced in accordance with the second compression scheme. Such an approach has been found to provide improved compression efficiency thereby reducing the volume of trace data produced.

Intelligent irrigation rain sensor

An intelligent irrigation rain sensor for use in an irrigation system comprises a rain sensor unit and a sensor control unit. The rain sensor unit has a rain catcher reservoir with an open top for receiving rainwater. The rain catcher has an internal volume for holding water and tapers into a funnel with an opening for metering equally sized round water droplets at a steady-state drip rate. At least one droplet detector is positioned directly below the funnel opening that contacts the water droplets from the funnel. The droplet detector includes detection electrodes for sensing a change in an electrical property being monitored by a detection control in the sensor control unit. Each droplet detected may be counted and the droplet count retained in a memory, or excluded from counting based on certain factors, such as the drip rate between droplets from the funnel opening. Upon exceeding a rain threshold amount over measurement time period, the intelligent irrigation rain sensor issues a rain signal to the irrigation controller. The intelligent irrigation rain sensor issues a corresponding dry signal to the irrigation controller after a drying period has elapsed. The present intelligent irrigation rain sensor may issue consecutive rain signals and accumulate drying periods for each, up to a predetermined limit, before issuing a single dry signal to the irrigation controller.

System and method for network file system server replication using reverse path lookup

The system and method described herein may use reverse path lookup to build mappings between file handles that represent network file system objects and full path names associated therewith and distinguish hard links between different file system objects having the same identifier with different parents or file names. The mappings and information distinguishing the hard links may then be cached to enable replicating changes to the file system. For example, a server may search the cached information using a file handle associated with a changed file system object to obtain the file name and full path name associated therewith. The server may then send the file name and full path name and metadata describing how the file system object was changed to a replica host, which may then replicate the change to the file system object.
