Linear actuator with an internal dampening mechanism

A linear actuator with an internal dampening mechanism is disclosed. The actuator has a housing has a first end and a second end and forms an internal chamber. A constricted opening is also added to the actuator at the first end. A piston is disposed within the housing and is capable of sliding along the chamber. The piston has a head portion and a shaft portion. The shaft portion is slidable through the constricted opening whereas the head portion is not slidable through the constricted opening. A fluid is also added to the actuator. The fluid is disposed within the housing. In one embodiment, the actuator is constructed such that the sliding of the shaft portion forces a fluid through the constricted opening such that the movement of the piston is dampened. In an alternative embodiment, the actuator includes one or more second pistons and an orifice. In this embodiment, the actuator is constructed such that the sliding of the piston forces the fluid through the orifice and causes the second pistons to telescopically extend from the first piston.

Assemblies including extendable, reactive charge-containing actuator devices

An assembly including a support housing and an actuator device. The actuator device includes an extendable initiator cup including at least one non-random fold and at least in part defining a storage chamber containing a reactive charge reactable to produce reaction products. The extendable initiator cup longitudinally extends from a first length to a second, greater length upon reaction initiation of the reactive charge. The extendable initiator cup is at least partially disposed within a longitudinally extending bore of the support housing. The support housing is effective to limit lateral expansion of the extendable initiator cup upon reaction initiation of the reactive charge. The assembly can include an electrical conductive member or an electrical switch. The extendable initiator cup can extend to sever the electrical conductive member or disengage the electrical switch, thereby interrupting the conduction of electricity through an electrical system. Alternatively, the extendable initiator cup can extend to engage the electrical switch thereby allowing the conduction of electricity through an electrical system.

Pyrotechnic actuator with a deformable membrane

A pyrotechnic actuator comprises a deformable membrane (24) separating a first chamber (20), which is able to receive pyrotechnic combustion gases, from a second chamber (22) containing a control member (32) displaceable by the membrane (24) during the operation of the actuator. In the inoperative state, the membrane (24) is prestressed counter to its deformation controlled by the intake of gases into the first chamber (20). In this way the functional travel is increased, which e.g. makes it possible to open or close a circuit with a larger cross-section without increasing the actuator size.

Hermetically sealed actuator

An actuator connected to receive high pressure gas from a pyrotechnic initiator incorporates a primary piston and a secondary piston mounted for limited movement along cylindrical bores in a housing; the pistons are held in a fixed inactive position and are restrained from movement within the housing by a tension screw connected to the primary piston and the housing. The tension screw incorporates a calibrated reduced diameter section that ruptures at a predetermined applied force to permit the pistons to move within the housing. Gaseous products resulting from initiation are trapped and maintained within the housing by an expandable bellows secured internally of the housing at one end of the bellows and secured at the opposite end of the bellows to the interior of the housing. A calibration / test port extends through the housing into the bore externally of the bellows to permit calibration and testing of the actuator without initiating the pyrotechnic device.

Motion damper

The motion damper includes a damper wall, damper stages, and a damper head. The damper wall and damper stages are successively smaller in size and have a nested relationship. The damper wall and damper stages are each flexibly attached to an adjacent damper stage or the damper wall such that the damper stages may deploy in a telescopic fashion away from the damper wall. The damper head is attached to a smallest damper stage. As a result, the damper stages change in position relative to the damper wall and relative to each other to absorb the kinetic energy of objects attached to the damper head and damper wall.
