Systems and methods for evaluating the urethra and the periurethral tissues

The present invention provides systems and methods for the evaluation of the urethra and periurethral tissues using an MRI coil adapted for insertion into the male, female or pediatric urethra. The MRI coil may be in electrical communication with an interface circuit made up of a tuning-matching circuit, a decoupling circuit and a balun circuit. The interface circuit may also be in electrical communication with a MRI machine. In certain practices, the present invention provides methods for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving the urethra and periurethral tissues, including disorders of the female pelvic floor, conditions of the prostate and anomalies of the pediatric pelvis.

Implant with high vapor pressure medium

An implant for use in a human or animal body can include a flexible housing with an outer wall and having a chamber therein. The implant can have at least one high vapor pressure medium within the chamber. The at one high vapor pressure medium can have a combined vapor pressure equal to or greater than about the average value of the hydrostatic pressure of the implantation site plus the skin tension of the housing minus the gas tension of the dissolved gasses present at the implantation site.

Object removal through a percutaneous suction tube

A method is described for using percutaneous access to a patient to remove an object from a cavity within the patient. The method includes inserting a suction tube into a port created by a percutaneous cut. An endoscope is also advanced into the cavity, however the endoscope passes through a patient lumen rather than through the port. Using a working channel within the endoscope, fluid is irrigated through the cavity. Additionally, a negative pressure is applied to the suction tube, such that the combination of fluid irrigation and negative pressure assist in removing the object from the cavity through the suction tube.

Guidewire

A urological guidewire includes a core formed of a first metallic material and extending toward an end of the guidewire. A coil having a plurality of convolutions is disposed around the core at the end of the guidewire, the coil being formed of a second metallic material different than the first metallic material. A mechanical interlock is formed to inhibit separation of the different materials forming the coil and the core. The mechanical interlock may include an enlargement at the end of the core and a bonding material fixing the enlargement to the coil. The convolutions may include a penultimate convolution with a first radius of curvature and an ultimate convolution having a second, shorter radius of curvature to form a bridge. In this case, portions of the core can be bent back on themselves and directed over or around the bridge to form the mechanical interlock.

Near-infrared spectroscopic tissue imaging for medical applications

Near infrared imaging using elastic light scattering and tissue autofluorescence are explored for medical applications. The approach involves imaging using cross-polarized elastic light scattering and tissue autofluorescence in the Near Infra-Red (NIR) coupled with image processing and inter-image operations to differentiate human tissue components.

System, apparatus, and method for viewing a visually obscured portion of a cavity

A system, apparatus, and method for viewing a visually obscured portion of a body cavity. The system includes an endoscopic-type instrument, an imaging apparatus, and a human interface apparatus. The endoscopic-type instrument includes a face tip assembly connected to a shaft assembly, the shaft assembly being connected to a handle and viewing assembly. The face tip assembly includes a plurality of input / output ports and a working channel extension to protect an optical image collector. The shaft assembly includes an actively flexible shaft segment and a passively flexible shaft. The method for viewing a visually obscured portion of a cavity includes the steps of providing an instrument having an actively flexible shaft segment and manipulating the actively flexible shaft segment to a desired angular deflection.

Trans-douglas endoscopical surgical device (TED) and methods thereof

The present invention discloses means and methods for providing trans-Douglas endoscopic surgical procedures in the pelvis and in other body portions, and especially gynecological, cardiological, urological, vascular, neurological or surgical operations; said method comprising steps of opening the Pouch of Douglas; inserting an U-shapeable or S-shaped endoscopic surgical device into the vagina in parallel to the blood vessels; introducing the distal end into the abdominal cavity; U-shaping or S-shaping the tubular assembly; and carrying out an operation in the pelvis.

Surgical gel seal

A surgical valve includes a housing with a proximal housing portion and a distal housing portion cooperating to define a gel cavity. A seal material is disposed in the gel cavity and includes a gel having flow characteristics and incompressible characteristics. A distal guide tube is provided to facilitate retrograde insertion of a surgical instrument into the seal material. During assembly, pressure is applied by the housing portions to the seal material in order to form a circumferential seal and to close an instrument channel. Manufacture can be facilitated by use of a mandrel for maintaining the structural elements in axial alignment. Complimentary screw threads disposed between the first and second housing portions can be used to pressurize the gel and thereby create a locking force on an inserted instrument. Detented tabs can be provided to facilitate control of this locking force.

Personal pelvic viewer

The Personal Pelvic Viewer™ abbreviated PPV™ is a hand-held instrument which a woman may place by herself into her own vagina to conveniently view and record video images of the interior of her vagina and cervix on a remote monitor, such as a television, computer display, or computer monitor. The PPV possesses a sealed video camera and may obtain its battery power through a short cable to a remote transceiver unit which also provides a wireless communication link to a base station transceiver which in turn provides the video information to be displayed on the television, computer display, etc. The PPV provides a convenient instrument that allows a lone female to observe the interior of her own vagina in total privacy for medical reasons, to determine her own fertility, and to observe her sexual response.
