224 results about "Residential gateway" patented technology

A residential gateway is a small consumer-grade router which provides network access between local area network (LAN) hosts to a wide area network (WAN) via a modem. The modem may or may not be integrated into the hardware of the residential gateway. The WAN is a larger computer network, generally operated by an Internet service provider.

Residential gateway for ethernet based metro networks and a global hierarchical ethernet addressing system

A residential gateway (RG) for distributing multimedia services to residential and business premises is disclosed. The RG connects multiple communication devices, such as TVs, telephones, computers, security cameras, and utility billing devices, to an Ethernet based metro / access network through either an optic fiber or a coaxial cable. The RG multiplexes upstream data from various communication devices into Ethernet frames according to the said Fixed-bandwidth Multimedia to Ethernet (FibME) protocol, and transmit the Ethernet frames through the link between the RG and the metro network. The RG also distributes the downstream data from the metro network to their corresponding destination devices in real time, also according to the said FibME protocol. The default bandwidth between the residential premise and the metro network is 100 Mbps full duplex. One Gbps or ten Gbps can be implemented based on the same FibME protocol for business applications. A Global Ethernet Addressing System (Global-HEAS) which will simplify the switch for the Ethernet systems is also disclosed.

Call signaling approach to user self-provisioning on VoIP using a touch-tone interface

A method for providing self-provisioning of VoIP telephony to a subscriber of a VoIP telephony service is disclosed. An un-provisioned residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber is instructed to collect a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) information that are associated with the subscriber. An example of a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber is the subscriber's E.164 address. The E.164 address and Personal Identification Number (PIN) information is verified. A source IP address that is associated with one or more Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) messages that are sent by the residential gateway is used as a residential gateway IP address for the residential gateway. The residential gateway IP address is then used to provision the residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber. According to certain embodiments, the above steps are carried out by a call agent from a self-provisioning system of a provider of the VoIP telephony services. One or more VoIP connections are established between the residential gateway and an announcement server. The announcement server sends VoIP messages through the VoIP connections to the subscriber via the residential gateway. A protocol server offers the residential gateway, via a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, a limited access IP address, a location of one or more Domain Name System (DNS) servers, and a Media Gateway Protocol (MGCP) endpoint name of the call agent from the self-provisioning system.

System and method for managing residential gateway by using smart terminal

The invention relates to a system and method for managing a residential gateway by using a smart terminal. The system comprises a smart terminal and a residential gateway, wherein the smart terminal and the residential gateway are in communicated through a gateway App (Application) communication protocol; the smart terminal comprises a residential gateway management module, log files, mapping files and a smart terminal native database, wherein the residential gateway management module is used for looking up log files, accessing and modifying data in the smart terminal native database and adding aliases to MAC (Media Access Control) addresses in the mapping files; and the residential gateway comprises a background service module, a residential gateway native database and a residential gateway native software module, wherein the residential gateway management module accesses to the residential gateway native database, and the background service module is managed through the residential gateway native software module in a matching manner. According to the system and the method, parameters for setting the residential gateway can be queried, corresponding WiFi SSID (Wireless Fidelity Service Set Identifier) and / or password information of the residential gateway and the smart terminal are updated synchronously, and latest smart terminal App or residential gateway software is actively pushed to users, so that the upgrading operation is simplified.

Residential gateway for providing backup interface to external network

The invention relates to a residential gateway for providing an end user of a network terminal in a residential network with access to an external network, said residential gateway comprising at least one network terminal interface arranged to provide an internal connection to said network terminal and an external network interface arranged to provide a first external connection to said external network. The residential gateway is characterized in that it comprises a secondary external network interface arranged to establish a second external connection with a mobile radio communications network in order to provide a backup access path to said external network, and a control unit arranged to activate said secondary external network interface, if not already activated, in response to detecting a loss of network connectivity over said first external connection, and forward data traffic between said residential network and said external network through said activated secondary external network interface. The invention also relates to a method for use in a residential gateway and a computer programme product.

Method and device for providing video, data and voice to end user devices

Method and system for providing data, video and voice to a group of end user devices includes receiving end user device group quality of service rules and access network node bandwidth constraints; assigning multicast addresses and unicast addresses to end user devices of the group in response to the access node bandwidth constraints; and providing, in response to the end user device group quality of service rules and requests to receive services from the residential gateways, data, video and voice utilizing the assigned multicast addresses and unicast addresses. Further methods include receiving location information representative of distances between multiple end user devices and access nodes; defining end user bandwidth constraints in response to the location information and in response to access node bandwidth constraints; and providing, in response to the end user bandwidth constraints and to requests to receive services from the end user devices, data, compressed video and voice.

Systems and methods for extending optical network services across non-optical channels

An optical communication system comprises a network interface device (NID) having a media converter coupled to an optical fiber of a passive optical network (PON). The media converter converts optical signals from the PON into electrical signals for communication across at least one non-optical channel, such as a conductive or wireless connection, to customer premises equipment (CPE), such as a residential gateway or other customer premises (CP) device. Rather than implementing an optical media access control (optical MAC) layer in the NID, an optical MAC layer for handling PON protocols and management is implemented by the CPE, thereby effectively extending the customer end of the PON across at least one non-optical connection to the CPE. By implementing the optical MAC layer at the CPE, the complexity of the NID is reduced thereby lowering the cost of the NID. In one embodiment, in an effort to further reduce the complexity of the NID, the optical MAC layer is configured to control a laser-on state of an optical transmitter in the NID.
