Time-multiplexed multi-program encryption system

A system and method are described for greatly increasing the number of services that can be encrypted with existing conditional access equipment. The method is most useful when many digitally compressed programs are encrypted at the same time. Only the most critical components of each compressed video, audio, or data stream are selected and then sequenced into a single stream. Additional formatting causes this sequence of segments from multiple sources to appear as a single continuous stream to the conditional access system. Once this stream has been encrypted, it is demultiplexed and the components are restored and re-sequenced into their respective programs. Messages such as the Entitlement Control Messages that are inserted into the stream by the encryption system, are also adjusted and included with each of the reconstructed programs. The technique not only allows encryption systems to be designed using less encryption hardware, but also simplifies the management of encryption sessions, particularly in on-demand programming applications.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for re-sequencing data packets received from multiple devices in a packet-based digital communication system. A set of data packets is received by a data packet sequencer. Each data packet includes an indicator of the originator of the data packet. The data packet sequencer stores the set of data packets, preferably in an input buffer. The data packet sequencer reorders the data packets by retrieving a first data packet and determining the originator of the first data packet. The data packet sequencer then transmits all data packets that were originated by a first originator of the first data packet prior to transmitting data packets that were not originated by the first originator.

A method and apparatus for creating a trick play video display from an MPEG-2 digital video transport stream are described. A trick play transport stream frame sequence template for each transport stream frame sequence and trick play video display mode supported by a video recorder is stored in the recorder. When the recorder receives an input transport stream frame sequence, the sequence is identified and template corresponding to that sequence and the selected trick play display mode is selected. The template is used to identify frames of the input transport stream to be appended to the trick play display transport stream frame sequence. When the trick play transport stream frame sequence is constructed the program clock reference, presentation time stamps and decoding time stamps associated with the frames are updated from information in the template.

A method and apparatus for synchronizing audio data to text data in which the text is manually or automatically divided into an arbitrary number of sections and a text section is selected for display and presented to a narrator for audio input. A human narrator reads the displayed selected section of text into a computer to form an audio data portion for the selected section that is linked to the text by entering synchronization marks to the computer. The sections of text may be selected for reading and audio input in any order and by any number of narrators.
