Structure independent searching in disparate databases

This invention allows keyword searches in both structured and unstructured databases, and across multiple databases of different vendors. An index database is created comprising word occurrences and table relationship information. In the case of unstructured databases with no predetermined schema, the relationship between different tables is derived through propagative n-level indexing and data is then populated in index tables. A database adapter enables indexing and searching across multi-vendor databases, which resolves discrepancies across different database access methodologies. Given a set of keyword inputs, the rows containing the search words and all the related rows are searched using word occurrences and relationship information.

System and method for enabling multi-element bidding for influencinga position on a search result list generated by a computer network search engine

InactiveUS20060190354A1Less controlledConservation workWeb data indexingAdvertisementsInformation retrievalInternet search engines
A system and method for enabling information providers using a computer network such as the Internet to influence a position for a search listing within a search result list generated by an Internet search engine. A database stores accounts for the network information providers. Each account contains contact and billing information for a network information provider. In addition, each account contains at least one search listing having at least three components: a description, a search term comprising one or more keywords, and a bid amount. The network information provider may add, delete, or modify a search listing after authenticated login. A search term relevant to the content of the web site or other information source to be listed is first selected. A search listing includes the search term and a description. A bidding process occurs when the network information provider enters a new bid amount for a search listing. The system and method then compares the bid amount with all other bid amounts for the same search term, and generates a rank value for all search listings having that search term. The rank value determines where the listing will appear on the search results list page that is generated in response to a query of the search term by a searcher.

Search engine

A search engine for retrieving documents from a database comprising a semantic document editor that is operable to allow a user to edit an existing document by creating one or more searchable compound word that contains information contextually relevant to the contents of the document. The editor is operable to associate the one or more created compound words with the document to produce an enhanced document having the compounds words associated therewith. A database is provided for storing a plurality of enhanced documents and a semantic query editor is provided that is operable to enable a searcher to address the database of enhanced documents with a query. The query editor is operable to receive the query and convert it into one or more compound search word that contains contextually relevant information. A search module is provided that is operable to receive the searchable compound words and to locate the relevant enhanced documents that have compound words associated with the document matching the searchable compound words. An output means is provided for presenting any located documents to the searcher.

Method and apparatus for construction and use of concept knowledge base

A data structure, apparatuses and methods for expanding a search query to be used by a web search engine is provided. The search query is expanded by accessing a concept knowledge base data structure having concept data objects and term data objects with each term data object defining a term and associated with at least one of the concept data objects. Search terms making up the search query are matched to term data objects and a concept set is generated containing concept data objects associated with the term data objects. A second set of term data objects are generated by using the concept data objects to locate term data objects associated with the concept data objects. A user can then select one of the term data objects in the second set to expand the user's search query.

Question answering system, data search method, and computer program

A question answering system includes a question answering unit, an analysis unit, a tree structure generation unit, a feature extraction unit, an evaluation unit and a re-ranking unit. The question answering unit executes search processing based on an input question and acquires answer candidates to the question. The analysis unit executes syntactic analysis processing or syntactic and semantic analysis processing on a passage obtained as a result of the search processing. The tree structure generation unit generates a tree structure based on an analysis result. The feature extraction unit extracts a relation between a search word applied in the search processing and each acquired answer candidate as a feature corresponding to each answer candidate from the tree structure. The evaluation unit determines an evaluation value of each answer candidate based on the feature extracted. The re-ranking unit re-ranks the answer candidates based on the evaluation values.

Method and apparatus for concept-based visual

A method and apparatus is provided for visually coding or sorting search results based on the similarity of the search results to one or more concepts. A search query containing search terms is used to conduct a web search and obtain search results comprising a number of document surrogates describing the located web pages. Concepts are obtained using the search terms and the similarities between the obtained concepts and the search results are evaluated. The search results are then displayed in a manner that indicates the relative similarity of search results to one or more of the determined concepts, such as by sorting the search results based on the level of similarity of the search results to one or more concepts or by providing an accordance indicator with each displayed search result the accordance indicators indicating the similarity of the corresponding search result with one ore more of the concepts.

Method and system of weighted context feedback for result improvement in information retrieval

A method and a system for re-ranking an existing result set of documents. A user starts a search by entering search term(s). The search term(s) is (are) transferred to a search engine which generates a result set ranked by the search term(s). The search engine, in parallel, automatically retrieves context information from returned result set which is related to the original set of documents. The search engine presents the context information to the user and asks for a feedback. The user performs a weighting of the presented context information in a range from “important” to “non-important”. The result set is then re-ranked with the user-weighted context information to increase the “rank distance” of important and non important documents. The documents that are on top of the list (highest context-weighted ranking value) represent the desired information.

System and method for enhancing e-commerce using natural language interface for searching database

A system and method for enhancing e-commerce using a natural language interface. The natural language interface allows the user to formulate a query in a natural language form, rather than in conventional search terms. The natural language interface provides the user with a "user friendly" interface. The natural language interface can process a query even if there is not an exact match between the user formulated search words and the content in the database. Furthermore, the natural language interface is capable of processing misspelled queries or queries having syntax errors. The method for enhancing e-commerce using a natural language interface comprises the steps of accessing a user interface provided by a service provider, entering a query using a natural language interface, the query being formed in a natural language, processing the query by the natural language interface, searching a database using the processed query, retrieving results from the database, and providing the results to the user. The system for enhancing e-commerce on the Internet comprises a user interface for receiving a query in a natural language form, a natural language interface coupled to the user interface for processing the query, a service provider coupled to the user interface for receiving the processed query, and one or more databases coupled to the user interface for storing information, wherein the system searches the databases using the processed query and provides the results to the user through the user interface.

Doubly Ranked Information Retrieval and Area Search

In a search system, document terms are weighted as a function of prevalence in a data set, the documents are scored as a function of prevalence and weight of the document terms contained therein, and then independently, the documents are ranked for a given search as a function of (a) their corresponding document scores and (b) the closeness of the search terms and the document terms. The steps can all be accomplished using matrices. Subsets of the documents can be identified with various collections, and each of the collections can be assigned a matrix signature. The signatures can then be compared against terms in the search query to determine which of the subsets would be most useful for a given search.

Graphical User Interface for a Search Query

Generation of a search query to be issued to a document search engine is supported by providing a GUI creation unit that generates a graphical user interface for supporting generation of a search query. The GUI creation unit generates a query-node creation window that is a GUI window for generating a new search word to be connected to a search query by a logical operator. The query-node creation window includes a sample-document preview area that displays a sample document, a facet list area that displays facets extracted from the sample document in list form, a query-node creation assist area to assist generation of the new search word, and a logical-operator selection icon to select a logical operator that connects the generated search word.
