A system and method for measuring the thickness of an ultra-thin multi-layer film on a substrate is disclosed. A physical model of an ultra-thin multilayer structure and Auger electron emission from the nano-multilayer structure is built. A mathematical model for the Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) measurement of the multilayer thin film thickness is derived according to the physical model. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) is first performed on a series of calibration samples. The results are entered into the mathematical model to determine the parameters in the mathematical equation. The parameters may be calibrated by the correlation measurements of the alternate techniques. AES analysis is performed on the ultra-thin multi-layer film structure. The results are entered into the mathematical model and the thickness is calculated.

Techniques for slicing a 3D model for manufacturing

One embodiment of the invention is a slicing engine that generates two or more slices of a virtual 3D model given a slice plane. The slicing engine then determines connection points on each of the slices that indicate how the 3D model is to be reconnected by the user when the 3D model is fabricated. The slicing engine also determines an optimized layout for the various slices of the 3D model on fabrication material for minimal use of the material. The user is then able to “print” the layout on the fabrication material via 3D printers, and connect the various printed slices according to the connection points to build a physical representation of the 3D model.

A method of calibrating excore detectors for a pressurized water reactor (PWR) includes: measuring peripheral core flux signals using excore detectors disposed at a plurality of locations spaced about the periphery of the core, and using the measured power distribution from either a core monitoring system or in-core flux measurement. Calibration of the excore detectors is broken into two parts: (1) the relation between the excore detector signal and weighted peripheral assembly axial offset, and (2) the relation between weighted peripheral assembly axial offset and core average axial offset. Relation (2) can be determined by a representative neutronics model. Accuracy of the neutronics solution is improved by applying nodal calibration factors, which represent the ratio of the measured three-dimensional power distribution to the nodal predicted three-dimensional power distribution and correct the neutronic results to match what would be measured if predictive scenarios were actually performed in the actual reactor core.
