Method and apparatus for identifying problems in computer networks

A network appliance for monitoring, diagnosing and documenting problems among a plurality of devices and processes (objects) coupled to a computer network utilizes periodic polling and collection of object-generated trap data to monitor the status of objects on the computer network. The status of a multitude of objects is maintained in memory utilizing virtual state machines which contain a small amount of persistent data but which are modeled after one of a plurality of finite state machines. The memory further maintains dependency data related to each object which identifies parent / child relationships with other objects at the same or different layers of the OSI network protocol model. A decision engine verifies through on-demand polling that a device is down. A root cause analysis module utilizes status and dependency data to locate the highest object in the parent / child relationship tree that is affected to determine the root cause of a problem. Once a problem has been verified, a “case” is opened and notification alerts may be sent out to one or more devices. A user interface allows all objects within the network to be displayed with their respective status and their respective parent / child dependency objects in various formats.

Method to determine the degree and stability of blood glucose control in patients with diabetes mellitus via the creation and continuous update of new statistical indicators in blood glucose monitors or free standing computers

Microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus are closely related to blood glucose levels and fluctuations. The Glycostator statistical package was created to allow patients and health care providers simple access to “glycemic indicators” which permit a “snapshot view” of the effectiveness of the patient's diabetes management program. Glycostator functions provide a simple way of enhancing the information already provided by home blood glucose monitoring devices. To this end, a set of new indices, including one called the Virtual A1c, are computed in a recursive fashion from blood glucose test results to provide a more meaningful day-to-day assessment of glycemic control. All indices can be made available at the meter user interface on request. The displayed indices allow patients to improve glycemic control by identifying problems with blood glucose control and lability that are less easily recognized in traditional blood glucose meter statistical packages. Virtual A1c emulates hemoglobin A1c continuously and provides better day-to-day assessment of long term glycemic control than does the traditional average blood glucose report. The method for computing each of these indices, including the Virtual A1c, allows for their implementation in commercial blood glucose monitors.

System and method for locality and user preference based food recommendations

A system and methods for generating and presenting recommendations of places to eat based on a user's preferences and profile. A set of preferences and ratings are maintained by multiple users which are used to filter and generate rating estimations. Preferences and ratings of other user's with similar preference profiles are used to increase or decrease the recommendations. The location and preferences of multiple users can also be compared to provide eating recommendations for a group of users. The recommendations and ratings can be drilled down to specific menu item for determining recommendations on the full meal or a specific item. The system can also be used by the restaurant owner to identify potential customers, target marketing messages, identify problems with the menu or staff, and improve the impression and quality of the restaurant and food.

Method and apparatus for verifying the contents of a global configuration file

A method and apparatus are provided for determining the validity of a global configuration file. In order to verify the global configuration file, the configuration file is first “flattened.” To flatten the configuration file, the rules in the first block of the configuration file are identified. A settings file is then created with the rules set as true. The normal configuration process is then performed on the configuration file. The resulting settings file constitute the flattened settings for the block and are associated with the block. A determination is then made as to whether any conflicting settings, inconsistently set related settings, or syntax errors exist within the flattened settings. If any such settings do exist, an error message is generated. This process is then repeated for each block in the configuration file so that flattened settings are created for each block. A testing block may also be utilized to identify problems with the settings file generate by the testing block. Reverse queries may also be performed on the settings file. Changes in the flattened configuration files caused by changes in the global configuration file can also be identified. The flattened files may also be used to simplify the server computer configuration process.

Automatic system configuration management

An automatic configuration system automatically analyzes a user's computer system configuration and recommends a more optimal configuration of components. The system determines the hardware and software components currently contained in the user's computer including versions of hardware and software components. The system uses a knowledge base of previously identified problems to determine an overall problem index value for the user's particular configuration. Generally, the overall problem index value is generally indicative of the quantity and / or severity of the problems associated with the user's computer. The automatic configuration system then varies the configuration (e.g., the versions of software) and determines a new overall problem index value for each variation. The system selects the configuration with the lowest overall problem index value, which generally will have the fewest and / or less severe problems and recommends that configuration to the user.

Dental Optical Diagnostic Apparatus

In the field of dental care, diagnoses have been and being made by means of X-ray images, visual observation, explorer, palpation, fluorometery, insertion of a pocket probe and observation, observation by means of a root canal meter and the use of a Doppler flood flowmeter. However, such diagnoses are invasive and not very clear and three-dimensional X-ray CT apparatus that are being used for diagnoses are very large and complex. Additionally, OCT apparatus for obtaining optical tomographys by using reflection light that are being used by ophthalmologists give rise to problems because of the profile of the detection probe and operability when such an apparatus is used in an oral cavity that contains hard tissues such as teeth and soft tissues such as gingiva for dental care. The present invention dissolves the above identified problems and provides a non-invasive and high resolution dental optical diagnostic apparatus. A dental optical diagnostic apparatus (1) according to the invention comprises a means (30) for generating guide light to irradiate the dental part of a subject for viewing, visible light for picking up a surface image and signal light of low coherence light for diagnosing the dental part, a camera (69) for picking up a surface image of the dental part, an OCT means for acquiring an optical tomography and an image display section (5) for displaying the obtained images.

Phase plane correlation motion vector determination method

InactiveUS7197074B2Eliminate spurious motion vectorTelevision system detailsImage analysisIdentifying problemsImage resolution
A phase plane correlation motion vector determination method identifies images areas in which motion took place. A reference image is shifted by the candidate motion vectors obtained from the phase plane correlation. The shifted reference image is correlated to determine similarity with the current image and to eliminate spurious motion vectors. Candidate motion vectors are validated to determine valid motion vectors and identify problem areas. In a preferred embodiment, a correlation resolution is set to a sub-block size. Sub-blocks of the reference image are shifted by candidate motion vectors for corresponding blocks. Shifted sub-blocks are correlated with sub-blocks of a current image using a sub-block neighborhood to determine valid vector assignments. Where an assignment proves invalid, global motion parameters are determined to assign motion vectors to sub-blocks where correlation fails.
