Mining of user event data to identify users with common interests

A computer-implemented matching service matches users to other users, and / or to user communities, based at least in part on a computer analysis of event data reflective of user behaviors. The event data may, for example, evidence user affinities for particular items represented in an electronic catalog, such as book titles, music titles, movie titles, and / or other types of items that tend to reflect the traits of users. Event data reflective of other types of user actions, such as item-detail-page viewing events, browse node visits, search query submissions, and / or web browsing patterns may additionally or alternatively be considered. By taking such event data into consideration, the matching service reduces the burden on users to explicitly supply personal profile information, and reduces poor results caused by exaggerations and other inaccuracies in such profile information.

Lung nodule detection and classification

A computer assisted method of detecting and classifying lung nodules within a set of CT images includes performing body contour, airway, lung and esophagus segmentation to identify the regions of the CT images in which to search for potential lung nodules. The lungs are processed to identify the left and right sides of the lungs and each side of the lung is divided into subregions including upper, middle and lower subregions and central, intermediate and peripheral subregions. The computer analyzes each of the lung regions to detect and identify a three-dimensional vessel tree representing the blood vessels at or near the mediastinum. The computer then detects objects that are attached to the lung wall or to the vessel tree to assure that these objects are not eliminated from consideration as potential nodules. Thereafter, the computer performs a pixel similarity analysis on the appropriate regions within the CT images to detect potential nodules and performs one or more expert analysis techniques using the features of the potential nodules to determine whether each of the potential nodules is or is not a lung nodule. Thereafter, the computer uses further features, such as speculation features, growth features, etc. in one or more expert analysis techniques to classify each detected nodule as being either benign or malignant. The computer then displays the detection and classification results to the radiologist to assist the radiologist in interpreting the CT exam for the patient.

User interface having analysis status indicators

A memory is provided for storing a plurality of data sets, each data set corresponding to an image of a location within a medical body of interest. Each image contains a number of features which correspond to data points that have been collected when creating an image of the medical body. The data points thus correspond to a measured parameter within the medical body. A visual display is provided of the image having a varying color scale for different regions of interest within the body. Medical personnel are able to select various regions of interest within the image for which further study is desired. In addition, within the region of interest the medical personnel may select a particular feature representing data corresponding to medical information within the body for which further study is desired and have the computer perform an analysis to compare to or locate other tissue of the same type elsewhere in the data sets. When such data analysis are performed on the images, analysis indicators are provided in the upper left hand corner of the display providing an easy to view indication of the results and status of any computer analysis being performed or that has been performed on the data.

Providing custom orthodontic treatment with appliance components from inventory

Computer analysis is made of individual patient related data in order to select standard or pre-manufactured orthodontic appliances or appliance components (10) that are most likely to provide orthodontic treatment suitable for the individual patient. This analysis can be made by the software of a custom orthodontic appliance designing system, without actually manufacturing the custom appliance. Geometric parameters (21-24, 28, 29) of a custom designed appliance may be compared with corresponding parameters of alternative standard appliances or appliance components so that the closest standard component can be used. The custom appliance can be designed to accommodate the geometries of one or more appliance components. Where custom mounting instructions that modify otherwise standard installation of an appliance or component will render the standard component more compatible with a custom appliance design, such instructions are provided to the orthodontist along with the selection. The invention is most useful in selecting orthodontic brackets, or combinations of standard brackets and standard archwires.

Adaptive network and method

A plurality of modules interact to form an adaptive network in which each module transmits and receives data signals indicative of proximity of objects. A central computer accumulates the data produced or received and relayed by each module for analyzing proximity responses to transmit through the adaptive network control signals to a selectively-addressed module to respond to computer analyses of the data accumulated from modules forming the adaptive network. Interactions of local processors in modules that sense an intrusion determine the location and path of movements of the intruding object and control cameras in the modules to retrieve video images of the intruding object. Multiple operational frequencies in adaptive networks permit expansions by additional networks that each operate at separate radio frequencies to avoid overlapping interaction. Additional modules may be introduced into operating networks without knowing the operating frequency at the time of introduction. Remote modules operating as leaf nodes of the adaptive network actively adapt to changed network conditions upon awaking from power-conserving sleep mode. New programs are distributed to all or selected modules under control of the base station.

Object analysis apparatus

The present invention relates to an apparatus, which can be made portable, for presenting batch samples of flowable objects for image capturing, more particularly to an automated apparatus that allows for the image analysis of grain or seeds. Objects are deposited into the hopper of the apparatus and, in a continuous stream, are received from the metered bottom opening of the hopper onto a metering belt, the surface of which is textured so as to frictionally-engage the objects. Objects are thereafter deposited, in a high density monolayer, into discrete object presentation areas on an imaging conveyor. The mechanics of the apparatus are co-ordinated to allow for the simultaneous triggering of a radiation device and an image capturing means only at the instant when the object presentation area arrives at a particular location on the imaging conveyor. Image data is captured with respect to every discrete object within an object presentation area, and is analysed by a computer. The speed of operation of the apparatus, in combination with the computer analysis of the image data, allows for the provision of a rapid quality assessment of a large number of objects and batch samples.
