Weighted fair queuing approximation in a network switch using weighted round robin and token bucket filter

An integrated network switch having multiple network switch ports for outputting data frames also includes a dequeuing system for selectively supplying a data frame for output according to a specified priority by an output switch port. The dequeuing system includes, for each network switch port, a plurality of priority queues configured for holding assigned data frames based on respective priorities assigned by switching logic. A weighted round robin scheduler supplies the assigned data frames held in the priority queues to the output switch port according to a prescribed weighted round robin scheduling. In addition, the dequeuing system uses token bucket filters for selectively passing the assigned data frames to the respective priority queues in a manner that ensures that a given data frame having a large size does not interfere with bandwidth reserved for high-priority packets requiring guaranteed quality of service. Each token bucket filter selectively passes the corresponding assigned data frame to the corresponding priority queue based on a determined availability of at least a required number of tokens corresponding to a determined size of the corresponding assigned data frame. If the token bucket filter determines an insufficient number of tokens are available relative to the required number of tokens, the token bucket filter either drops the frame or shifts the frame to a lower priority queue. Hence, weighted fair queuing can be approximated using weighted round robin scheduling without interference by large-sized data packets.

Wireless bandwidth aggregation

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for dynamic bandwidth expansion for wireless clients of a wireless wide-area network (WWAN), wherein each client has an allocated bandwidth for communicating over the WWAN and the clients are within wireless signal reception of each other. The WWAN clients may voluntarily or in a predetermined manner join a pool of bandwidth-sharing clients. A wireless aggregation server and a wireless pool boss work in cooperation to utilize unused transmit and receive bandwidth from each of the pool members.

Technique for providing program guide data through a communications network delivering programming content

In order to efficiently utilize the limited transmission bandwidth of a communications network, e.g., a cable network, guide data for constructing an interactive program guide (IPG) is delivered to a set-top terminal using different methodologies. For example, the guide data associated with those programs which are likely of interest to a user is automatically provided piecemeal in a broadcast stream. The set-top terminal, along with other terminals, may retrieve from such a broadcast stream some or all of the guide data therein over time, which is cached in the terminal in anticipation of a user's invocation of an IPG. On the other hand, the guide data associated with those programs which are less likely of interest to a user is furnished upon request by the set-top terminal needing such guide data to realize an IPG desired by the user. In addition, guide data for each program may be divided into detail guide data providing details of the program (e.g., a synopsis of the program content), and grid guide data providing basic information about the program (e.g., title, channel and broadcast time). A first time window and a second time window may be defined such that the grid guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the first time window and the detail guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the second time window are automatically provided in the broadcast stream. The rest of the detail and grid guide data may be furnished upon request when needed.

Method and apparatus for enabling a compiler to reduce cache misses by performing pre-fetches in the event of context switch

A method for reducing cache memory misses in a computer that performs context switches between at least a first context and a second context. A First logic identifies a first prefetch region in a first memory element and a second logic identifies critical memory references within the first prefetch region during compilation of a computer program. The critical memory references within the first prefetch region correspond to data in cache memory if a context switch occurs from a process or thread associated with the second context to a process or thread associated with the first context during program execution. Third logic prefetches data associated with the identified critical memory references and stores the prefetched data in cache memory prior to a process or thread associated with the first context being resumed when a switch from the second context to the first context occurs during program execution.

Optical combiner device

An optical device for combining optical signals of different wavelengths is described wherein an array of laser output beams are collimated, directed to propagate along a similar path, and coupled into an optical fiber through a single molded part. The single-part optical coupling module can be constructed in various ways to achieve the desired configuration. One example is a single plastic-injection molded part, containing mechanical alignment features, an array of collimating lenses, and a focusing lens housed within a fiber optic connector ferrule. The laser output beams are separately passed through separate radial sectors of the focusing lens.
