A double-walled exhaust pipe is used with an internal combustion engine and includes a first elongate outer tube and a second elongate inner tube positioned concentrically within the outer tube and affixed at the ends. A chamber is created between the inner and outer tubes which extends substantially their entire length and is sealed against the atmosphere by welding at the ends of the tubes. A one-way valve is affixed to the outer tube and in fluid communication with the chamber so that a vacuum having a negative pressure at least 20 inches of mercury can be drawn. The outer tube preferably has a greater wall thickness than the inner tube.

A muffler includes a muffler body disposed on a lower portion of an engine and a passage that extends upward from the muffler body and is opened in an upper front portion of a chain saw body. Thus, exhaust gas can be discharged forward from the chain saw body, so that exhaust sounds can be dispersed forward. Consequently, the exhaust sounds propagated to an operator can be reduced and therefore a work environment can be improved. Also, since exhaust gas is discharged after the exhaust gas passes through a long passage extending upward from the muffler body, the exhaust gas can be cooled down. A silencer includes a cylindrical member held between a body connected to an exhaust side of a fluid pressure device and a disk-shaped retaining member. A net-shaped sound absorber is disposed around an outer circumference of the cylindrical member. A pressure fluid flows from the body into the interior of the cylindrical member and is discharged toward the sound absorber through a plurality of first through fifth exhaust holes formed in the cylindrical member. Accordingly, dust in the pressure fluid is removed by the sound absorber, which is formed of a plurality of stacked filters, and further, the pressure fluid is discharged to the outside after exhaust noises have been absorbed by the sound absorber.
