Heart valve delivery system

A delivery system for delivering a prosthetic heart valve to a native valve site within the human vasculature. The prosthetic valve is disposed on a balloon at the end of a balloon catheter. The balloon catheter passes through a delivery sleeve assembly and handle. A pull wire travels from the handle to a distal end of the delivery sleeve assembly. Actuation of the handle pulls on the pull wire, which causes openings in a slotted tube of the delivery sleeve assembly to close, thus causing the delivery sleeve assembly to bend. A stretchable cover is placed over the slotted tube for biasing the steerable catheter toward a straight position. Once advanced to the native valve site, the prosthetic valve is deployed by inflating the balloon.

Device and method for assisting in the implantation of a prosthetic valve

A system for percutaneously introducing a prosthetic valve into a patient's vasculature comprises a balloon dilatation catheter, a prosthetic valve mounted coaxial to the dilatation balloon, and a pusher member comprising a longitudinally extending tubular member encompassing the shaft of the catheter. The distal end of the pusher member preferably corresponds to the proximal end of the stent component of the prosthetic valve. The pusher member provides enhanced longitudinal pushability for facilitating advancement of the prosthetic valve to a treatment site. The system is well-suited for advancing a prosthetic valve or other medical device through an introducer sheath having a relatively small inner diameter. The introducer sheath may be formed with a tapered proximal end portion for receiving the prosthetic valve and for reducing a diameter of the prosthetic valve during advancement therethrough.

Methods and apparatus for accessing and treating body lumens

Access to blood vessels and other body lumens is provided from spaced-apart access penetrations. A penetrating device is introduced through a first access penetration to a target site within the body lumen and then used to penetrate outwardly from the body lumen to an external surface on an organ or the patient's skin. A guidewire may then be deployed through the penetrating device, and the penetrating device removed to leave the guidewire in place. Catheters and other interventional and diagnostic devices may then be introduced to the target site from either or both of the first and second access penetrations over the same guidewire.

Hybrid jet/electric vtol aircraft

A fixed-wing VTOL aircraft features an array of electric lift fans distributed over the surface of the aircraft. A generator is (selectively) coupled to the gas turbine engine of the aircraft. During VTOL operation of the aircraft, the engine drives the generator to generate electricity to power the lifting fans. Power to the lifting fans is reduced as the aircraft gains forward speed and is increasingly supported by the wings.

An automatic takeoff thrust management system can be used in an aircraft with at least two engines. The management system comprises an aircraft status sensor or set of sensors capable of detecting establishment of takeoff climb conditions, and engine failure detectors respectively coupled to the at least two engines and capable of detecting engine failure. The management system further comprises thrust control modules respectively coupled to the at least two engines and capable of controlling the thrust of the engines, and a controller coupled to the aircraft status sensors, the engine failure detectors, and the thrust control modules. The controller reduces thrust by a selected amount upon detecting establishment of takeoff climb conditions and, if engine failure is detected, restoring thrust to an initial or a higher schedule.

Stent delivery system with adjustable length balloon

A stent delivery system with an adjustable length balloon. The system includes a stent delivery catheter having an expandable member with an inflated length that can be adjusted according to the length of a stent to be expanded. An exterior sheath having an expandable distal tip is disposed about the expandable member such that the sheath can be longitudinally adjusted so as to expose a desired length of the expandable member. The exposed length of the expandable member provides an effective working length required to expand the stent for deployment. Additionally, where subsequent expansions of the deployed stent may be necessary, post dilitation may be achieved by re-positioning the catheter and re-adjusting the sheath to form an effective working length of the expandable member which corresponds to the length of the stent that needs further expansion.

A guidewire apparatus for a medical device that includes an expandable guidewire section that can be locked in an expanded state. In one use, the expandable section can be temporarily locked to a working element of a medical device to facilitate the transmission of torque from the guidewire to the medical device. Hence, this configuration may be utilized to aid in orientation of the working element with a vessel side branch by providing the user with the ability to apply a rotational force to the distal end of the stent delivery system. Another use includes docking the expandable section near an opening into a guidewire lumen at the catheter tip. This configuration is particularly useful in forming a smooth transition between the guidewire and the catheter tip to reduce the phenomenon of fish-mouthing.
