Method and apparatus for a rearrangeably non-blocking switching matrix

A switching apparatus is disclosed that employs a relatively simple and inexpensive switching matrix, but which avoids interruption of existing connections when connections are added or removed. The switching matrix switches errorlessly by controlling the point in time at which switching occurs. Using such a technique, switching can be performed without disturbing the connections already configured in the switching matrix, and so is referred to herein as being non-blocking. Optionally, the incoming data can be rearranged to provide a larger window of time in which the switching matrix can be switched. In the case of a switch using an optical backplane, this also allows more time for various components of the system (e.g., clock / data recovery units) to re-acquire lock. The switching apparatus includes a switching matrix and control circuitry. The switching matrix has a matrix input, a control input and a number of matrix outputs, and is configured to receive an information stream at the matrix input. The information stream includes a number of portions, while the control circuitry has a control output coupled to the control input. The control circuitry is configured to initially configure the switching matrix to output the information stream at a one of the matrix outputs and to subsequently configure the switching matrix to output the information stream at another of the matrix outputs during a period of time during which the one of the portions is transiting the switching matrix.

Method and system for transferring TRILL (transparent interconnection of lots of links) network messages in an ASIC(application specific integrated circuit )

The invention provides a method and a system for transferring TRILL(transparent interconnection of lots of links) network messages in an ASIC(application specific integrated circuit ). The method includes steps of analyzing received messages to obtain message header information including destination MAC(media access control) address, VLAN(virtual local area network) information and input interface configuration information, and confirming types of the received messages; acquiring input interface information and looking up tables according to the input interface configuration information; looking up the table by particularly looking up the TRILL transfer table according to the analyzed destination MAC address and the VLAN information so as to acquire output interface configuration information; acquiring output interface information required to be transferred according to a table look-up result; packaging the analyzed messages into TRILL messages including the destination MAC address and sending the TRILL messages out from corresponding output interferences. Since the advantages of high bandwidth and low cost of an Ethernet switch chip are utilized sufficiently, cost in network deployment is reduced for establishment of a TRILL network data center.

Bandwidth efficient cable network modem

A MUD enabled cable modem that provides efficient use of cable television network bandwidth in the presence of interference and noise is disclosed. The modem design provides for compatibility with existing network hardware and protocols so that bandwidth efficient modems configured in accordance with the principles of the present invention may be added to the network without removing installed hardware and software. A bandwidth efficient modem in the cable network head-end increases reverse link capacity from the terminals to the head end, while bandwidth efficient modems in cable network terminals increases forward link capacity from the head end to the terminals. Bidirectional bandwidth efficiency is thereby enabled.
