Magnetic disk drive with flying height control system

Embodiments of the invention appropriately control the flying height of a magnetic head slider as necessary without making the magnetic head slider touch the magnetic disk. In one embodiment, when a magnetic disk drive is started, the level of electric power predefined for the ordinary temperature (room temperature) is read in from the internal memory of an MPU. A temperature sensor measures the internal temperature of the magnetic disk drive and sends it to the MPU. According to the temperature sent from the temperature sensor, the MPU calculates the level of electric power which should be applied to a flying height adjustment structure. According to the calculated electric power, the MPU increases or decreases the electric power applied to the flying height adjustment structure. At a flying height controlled (corrected) by the flying height adjustment structure, a magnetic head slider performs read / write on a magnetic disk.

Power-efficient sign extension for booth multiplication methods and systems

Techniques for the design and use of a digital signal processor, including processing transmissions in a communications (e.g., CDMA) system. Power-efficient sign extension for Booth multiplication processes involves applying a sign bit in a Booth multiplication tree. The sign bit allows the Booth multiplication process to perform a sign extension step. This further involves one-extending a predetermined partial product row of the Booth multiplication tree using a sign bit for preserving the correct sign of the predetermined partial product row. The process and system resolve the signal value of the sign bit by generating a sign-extension bit in the Booth multiplication tree. The sign-extension bit is positioned in a carry-out column to extend the product of the Booth multiplication process. Then, the method and system form a final product from the Booth multiplication tree by adding the carry-out value to the sign bit positioned at least a predetermined column of the Booth multiplication tree. The result is to effectively extend the sum component of the final product with the sign and zero-extending the carry component of the final product.

Multicast packet control apparatus

When multicast distribution is performed on a network where a point-to-point connection is made between user terminals and a multicast router, the multicast router is protected from load due to response reports, join requests, or leave statements sent from the user terminals simultaneously. If the user terminals send response reports simultaneously, a Layer 2 switch disposed between the user terminals and the multicast router limits response reports sent to the multicast router. The Layer 2 switch prevents response reports sent from the same user terminal from being discarded consecutively, by sending a response report sent from the same user terminal to the multicast router 200 with priority in the next join confirmation event. If the user terminals send join requests or leave statements simultaneously, the Layer 2 switch limits the join requests or leave statements sent to the multicast router 200 in the same manner. The Layer 2 switch further enlarges a transmission buffer thereof at the multicast router side, so that the packets can be stored in the buffer.

Cabinet child safety lock

A child safety lock to selectively secure cabinet drawers and doors by using tie-wraps to mount a horizontally oriented base standoff onto the front rail of the cabinetry in a manner that won't hinder opening and closing the related doors and drawers. At least one spring-loaded latch member is pivotally disposed on the base standoff above a notched out section. The latch member stays frictionally engaged in the horizontal position due to the bias provided by spring-loaded pivot point when access is desired. To restrict access therein, the adult simply turns the latch member to the vertical position to block the door / drawer wherein the spring bias pulls it into the notched out section thereby necessitating the more complex action of simultaneously pulling and turning the latch member to allow access thereto.
