Selective alignment of stators in axial airgap electric devices comprising low-loss materials

An axial gap dynamoelectric machine comprises first and second stators disposed coaxially with an intermediate rotor. The stators are selectively aligned with an axial offset between the positions of their respective teeth and slots. The stators comprise toroidal cores having laminated layers composed of a material selected from the group consisting of amorphous and nanocrystalline metals and optimized Fe-based alloy. Optionally, the machine further comprises misalignment means for adjusting the offset of the stators. Adaptive adjustment permits the machine to be operated to in a mode that reduces the back EMF of the motor, allowing constant voltage to be maintained as speed is increased. Reducing back EMF also allows a wider range of operating speed, especially in combination with use of high pole counts. Alternatively, the machine can be operated, e.g. at lower speed, in a constant torque mode. The machine may exploit the high pole count achievable by use of improved soft magnetic materials. Also provided are techniques for reducing torque ripple during operation, and also for using the stator offset in combination with a dual full wave bridge rectifier arrangement.

Stator coil arrangement for an axial airgap electric device including low-loss materials

A dynamoelectric, rotating electric machine includes a stator assembly that includes stacked stator coil windings. The machine is preferably a polyphase, axial airgap device. Improved slot filling results from the stacked stator coil configuration. Device performance capability is thereby increased. The stator assembly of the electric device has a magnetic core made from low loss, high frequency material. A high pole count permits the electrical device to operate at high commutating frequencies, with high efficiency, high power density and improved performance characteristics. Low-loss materials incorporated by the device include amorphous metals, nanocrystalline metals, optimized Si—Fe alloys, grain-oriented Fe-based materials or non-grain-oriented Fe-based materials.

A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) roadable aircraft which has the features and dimensions of a typical road vehicle is disclosed. When operated on the road the wheels are powered by the engine. When the vehicle is configured for flight, a plurality of propellers is deployed from the storage compartment located on the roof and is powered by the same engine. The conversion process transforms the vehicle into a highly manoeuvrable quadcopter or a multi-rotor aircraft. The design concept enables propellers of relative large diameter to be conveniently secure to the vehicle, while allowing reliable deployment, retrieval and storage of the propellers as required. The total combined area of the propellers enables a low disk loading in the range of some helicopters with equivalent flight efficiency. The propellers are shrouded for safe operation. The conversion is automated, fast, and can be carried out while the vehicle is still moving.

Functional coverage driven test generation for validation of pipelined processors

A functional coverage based test generation technique for pipelined architectures is presented. A general graph-theoretic model is developed that can capture the structure and behavior (instruction-set) of a wide variety of pipelined processors. A functional fault model is developed and used to define the functional coverage for pipelined architectures. Test generation procedures are developed that accept the graph model of the architecture as input and generate test programs to detect all the faults in the functional fault model. A graph model of the pipelined processor is automatically generated from the specification using functional abstraction. Functional test programs are generated based on the coverage of the pipeline behavior. Module level property checking is used to reduce test generation time.

Apparatus and method for sharing an external memory between multiple network switches

A non-blocking network switch arrangement of plural network switches provides a single, shared external memory for the network switches. Each network switch in the arrangement may write data frames to a respective predetermined portion of the external memory allocated to each switch. When accessing the external memory, each network switch may access any portion of the external memory to transfer data frames to other network stations. Thus, data frames are accessed by each switch in the arrangement directly from the single, shared external memory, thereby eliminating the potential for blocking due to transfer of data frames from the memory of one switch to the memory of another switch.
