Method for joining metal and plastic workpieces

The present invention relates to a method for connecting a metal workpiece and a plastic workpiece by means of a joining tool, including positioning the metal workpiece and the plastic workpiece, bringing the front end of the pin, the sleeve and the clamping ring in contact with an outer surface of the metal workpiece, rotating the sleeve and the pin so as to generate friction between the front ends of the sleeve and the pin and the outer surface of the metal workpiece, and moving the pin and the sleeve in the axial direction while both are rotated, one of the sleeve and the pin penetrating into the metal workpiece and the other of the sleeve and the pin being retracted from the outer surface thereof. The axial movement into the metal workpiece is stopped before the one of the sleeve and the pin reaches the contact surface and after stopping the axial movement the one of the sleeve and the pin is retracted from the metal workpiece and the other is moved towards the outer surface of the metal surface until the front ends of the pin and the sleeve are on the same level.

ADS-Bsec: a holistic framework to secure ADS-B

Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) is one of the most prominent air traffic surveillance technologies. It can be used not only as a complement in existing radar-based technologies to locate aircraft, but also as a replacement in areas without radar coverage. However, a major flaw in the deployment of this technology is it reliance on clear-text, open broadcast of messages, which makes it vulnerable to attackers. A solution to this vulnerability is ADS-Bsec, a holistic framework that solves the root cause of ADS-B problems by enforcing authenticity and integrity in ADS-B messages. This is accomplished without changing the message format and, along with a proper key exchange mechanism. The framework also leverages results from radio-location add risk-adaptive techniques in order to prevent attacks targeting ADS-B. ADS-Bsec is a promising framework for integrating ADS-B to NextGen infrastructure in a secure and affordable fashion.

Biomarkers for prognosis

The invention relates to biomarkers for determining the prognosis of cancer patients. By determining the level of the biomarker HR23B in the cell or patient, and optionally determining the levels of one or more of the biomarkers HDAC6, LC3 and HSP90, the invention provides a method for determining the susceptibility of a cell or a patient of interest to entering an autophagocytic state upon treatment with a drug. The invention also provides a method of determining susceptibility of a cell or patient to treatment with a drug. Entering an autophagocytic state is thought to be a tumour cell survival mechanism, whereby the tumour cell avoids apoptosis. The methods of the invention may therefore be helpful for determining whether a patient should be treated and for determining the prognosis upon drug treatment.

Salt and pH tunable resist patterns on polyelectrolyte multilayers

A method for selectively removing a resist material from the polycationic surface of a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) film, without disturbing adhering interactions between the cationic film surface and bound biomaterials such as cells, proteins, and nucleic acids. The resist material is one that that inhibits or prevents the further deposition of cells or other biomaterial; it thus masks the cationic surface from application of biomaterials. In one embodiment the resist material is a carboxy functional oxyalkylene oligomer. It is removed by exposing the film containing the bound biomaterial and the bound resist material to a pH below 4.5, and / or to a salt concentration of higher than 0.01 M.
