A single-carriage reversing train positioning system which includes an extending spike-type car engaging member for engaging and moving one or more railcars. An extending chuck assembly may be provided with the ability to operate gates in bottom-discharging railcars. The system uses a single self-propelled carriage with an on-board carriage drive system that includes a drive motor which operates the car along a fixed chain situated along a guideway. A generally horizontally disposed, laterally extendable pin car-engaging assembly is mounted on the car-moving carriage for aligning with and engaging a hook loop on a railcar for moving the car. A gate-operating assembly which includes a laterally extendable chuck system which aligns with, engages and rotates gate-operating capstans on bottom discharging railcars may also be provided.

A point-to-point transit system for riders includes an elongate guideway, a plurality of autonomous vehicles disposed in the guideway, a plurality of selectively actuable rider access portals in the side of the guideway, and a control system, configured to automatically guide the vehicles within the guideway. The rider access portals are configured to allow ingress and egress of riders to the autonomous vehicles in the guideway. The control system is configured to allow each vehicle to travel between origin and destination locations that are independently selected by a rider.

An autonomous personal transportation system for moving passengers and light freights is constructed with a track network and small vehicles on the track network. There are a number of stations and stops for loading and unloading on side tracks off the mainline of the track network. The vehicle width is limited to a dimension for one seat. The vehicles can be coupled statically or dynamically to form a train. The track has side rails for the rigid wheels of the vehicle and a central rail for centering the vehicle on the guideway and providing additional acceleration and braking capability. Express trains catch up to local trains at express stations along the line, and provision is made to allow the express trains to physically or “virtually” pass the local train at those stations. A vehicular impact absorbing apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of tubular guide rails having a guide slit longitudinally formed at the upper part of each guide rail fixed to the ground. A plurality of sliders are movably mounted in the guide rail at a predetermined intervals, the upper part of each slider is laid on the upper part of the guide rail through the guide slit. A plurality of cushion units are mounted on the upper part of each slider. Each cushion unit is elastically deformed by vehicular impacts with retracting alongside the guide rail. A group of cushion pins are mounted across the guide rails at predetermined intervals between the sliders. The cushion pins also absorb the kinetic energy of an impact by being broken in turn by the slider that is retracting rearward. A stopper is installed around the rear end of the guide rail for stopping the retracting cushion units. A side fence is retractably mounted alongside the cushion units; the one end of the side fence is fixed to the stopper and the other to the front cushion unit. A successive cushion and deceleration of the impacts is possible in this arrangement.
