Guideway activated magnetic switching of vehicles

A system for switching a transport vehicle comprising: a guideway, a vehicle that moves along the guideway, and a magnetic field source that creates a force on the vehicle to affect motion in a desired direction at a switch. Once the vehicle has started motion through the switch the guidance can be continued by use of permanent magnets until the normal guidance system is effective. The switching scheme can work with any suspension scheme, including wheels and maglev, and can work with any lateral guidance scheme, including horizontal guide wheels and magnetic guidance. The system can be used with very closely spaced vehicles, such as with Personal Rapid Transit, material handling, and elevators with multiple cabs in the same shaft.

Personal lift device

A personal lift device is disclosed having a motor having an output shaft. A gearing system is operatively connected to the output shaft for increasing torque. A strap for suspending a weight is wound onto a spool and rotating the spool extends and retracts the strap. A drive connection is made between the gearing system and the spool to permit said motor to drive said spool. A brake is associated with said spool to prevent unwanted extension of said strap from said spool, when a weight is suspended by said strap. In a preferred embodiment a clutch is provided between the brake and the drive train, and the greater the weight supported by the spool the greater the braking force. An emergency lift and lower device is also provided in the event of a failure of the motor.

Load-minimizing, trolley arrester apparatus and method

A system comprising a cable held in suspension and a trolley traveling along the cable relies on a brake to control velocity and limit net downhill acceleration of the trolley. The trolley may include a brake pad positioned to contact the cable. At the downhill end of the ride, the lever actuating the brake is caught and lifted by a capture ring, thus relieving the braking load on the trolley. Also, the trolley engages a comparatively modest, second resistance mechanism, such as, for example, a system of springs, that gradually increases in resistance with distance of motion of the trolley thereagainst, bringing the trolley to a gradual halt at a rate to improve comfort of a rider and reduce acceleration forces (loads) on the trolley.

Object movement system and method

Moves objects through two / three dimensional space via at least one movement line coupled with opposing sides of a platform. The movement line(s) control the horizontal and vertical (Z-axis) motion of the platform. Displacing a portion of the movement line(s) allows vertical displacement of the platform. There is no need for complex computer control since Z-axis displacement is substantially independent of horizontal movement. Nested embodiments utilizing one or more line allow for three-dimensional movement of an object or angular displacement of the platform with respect to the vertical axis. A mounting beam for positioning and supporting the Z-axis and horizontal axis motors may also be positioned independently of the platform. Many useful devices may be attached to the platform. Some embodiments may utilize two lines to provide redundancy and some of these embodiments may only drive one of the two lines for Y axis movement.
