Human grasp assist device and method of use

A grasp assist device includes a glove portion having phalange rings, contact sensors for measuring a grasping force applied by an operator wearing the glove portion, and a tendon drive system (TDS). The device has flexible tendons connected to the phalange rings for moving the rings in response to feedback signals from the sensors. The TDS is connected to each of the tendons, and applies an augmenting tensile force thereto via a microcontroller adapted for determining the augmenting tensile force as a function of the grasping force. A method of augmenting a grasping force of an operator includes measuring the grasping force using the sensors, encoding the grasping force as the feedback signals, and calculating the augmenting tensile force as a function of the feedback signals using the microcontroller. The method includes energizing at least one actuator of a tendon drive system (TDS) to thereby apply the augmenting tensile force.

Method and system for over-steer avoidance

An early warning system for a tractor operator engaged in towing or pushing an aircraft includes two ultrasonic sensors that are used to create a detection area in which the aircraft should be present when the steering angle is well within a safe range. When one of the detectors fails to detect the presence of the aircraft, then the operator is alerted, before over steering can occur, in order that corrective action can be undertaken. Accordingly, complex distance-measuring algorithms can be avoided as can the requirement that an aircraft fuselage have a specially modified detection region.

Hair styling tongs with biased handles

Hairdressing tongs have a pair of arms extending from handles. Each arm has a heating pad affixed thereto. The handles have opposed openings. A central element is positioned between the handles and fitted within the openings such that the central element is slidable toward the handles. The central element has guide openings. Springs are positioned in the guide openings for biasing apart the handles. The springs enable hand pressure to move the handles and arms together from a completely open position to a completely closed position and, in absence of the hand pressure, to maintain the handles and arms in relatively parallel configuration, biased against stops of the central element.

Apparatus and method for automatically loading or unloading printed circuit boards for semiconductor modules

An apparatus for automatic loading or unloading printed circuit boards (PCBs) for semiconductor modules is disclosed. The apparatus employs an elastic jig carrier into which the PCBs are loaded. The jig carrier includes movable clamps for fixing the PCBs by elastic force. A jig opener of the apparatus applies opening force, in the reverse direction of the elastic force, to the movable clamps so that the PCBs can be loaded into or unloaded from the jig carrier by a picker. The jig carrier is transferred along a conveyor belt, while the PCBs are supplied from a PCB stage such as a tray to the jig carrier. The apparatus may further comprise a gripper and a rotator. The gripper grips the upright PCBs and the rotator rotates them to be horizontal, so that the picker can pick up the horizontal PCBs. The apparatus may also comprise an aligner for exact alignment of the PCBs in the jig carrier. A method for loading or unloading the PCBs into or from the jig carrier is also disclosed in connection with the apparatus.

Refuse container transporter and lift

A lift apparatus for conveying, lifting and at least partially inverting a refuse container for emptying into a dumpster or a refuse receptacle. The apparatus preferably has a base with wheels and a handle to facilitate transport. In one embodiment, the handle telescopes vertically and is hook shaped and adapted for engaging the lip of a dumpster or garbage chute. A pair of offset pivot arms is pivotally mounted to the frame and to a bin carriage, into which a refuse receptacle may be received. Application of a pivoting force to the pivot arms lifts and at least partially inverts the bin carriage for emptying the refuse container. Preferably a damper is provided on bin carriage movement as well as a locking mechanism to prevent bin carriage movement while being conveyed. The device may be operated manually, or adapted with mechanical power output devices to simplify lifting.

Method and apparatus for placing discrete parts transversely onto a moving web

This invention pertains to processing continuous webs such as paper, film, composites, and the like, in dynamic continuous processing operations. More particularly, it relates to transferring discrete parts to a continuous web, whether paper, film, composite, or the like. Specifically, the invention relates to methods and apparatus for taking discrete parts from a source in a taking zone, optionally taking the discrete parts as components of a continuous web, onto a transport head on a transfer assembly, severing the discrete parts from the continuous web if received as part of a continuous web, rotating the transfer assembly about a first axis and correspondingly rotating the transport head about a second axis radial to the first axis, to thereby present the discrete parts to a receiver in a transfer zone, and transferring the discrete parts to the receiver in the transfer zone. The invention includes using a roughened taking section on the transport head, interacting with textured surface on the discrete parts, to hold the discrete parts to the transport head, with optional use of suction through the transport head to assist in holding the discrete parts to the transport head. Novel apparatus is included for delivering suction to and through rotating slip rings.

Agricultural apparatus and method

A conveyor system (4, 5) moves vertical poles (2) in an agricultural facility between a growing area (20) and a workstation (W). Each pole carries plant growing containers (3) at multiple levels (H1-H9). An irrigation reservoir (30) may be mounted atop each pole. Irrigation lines (31-33) from the reservoir may be individually metered (35) at each level to compensate for differing water pressure with height. Sensors (40) in the reservoir and at each level of the poles may provide a controller (36) with data input. The controller may impose different growing conditions in different areas of the facility, including vertically different grow areas (20A, 20B), and controls pole movements and locations selectively to provide a sequence of poles at the workstation ready to harvest on a demand schedule. The workstation may have multiple heights (W1, W2, W3) for tall poles that increase plant density per facility footprint.
