Method and apparatus for preserving background continuity in images

The disclosed system has particular applications to image archives and reediting. Given an image of an article having graphic objects including texts and pictures, the disclosed system first distinguishes graphic objects from the background by segmenting the image so as to produce an object image comprising a foreground, wherein the foreground corresponds to the graphic objects in the image. With respect to the foreground, the disclosed system "repaints" those spaces previously occupied by the graphic objects, referred to as object spaces, with the background color in the image as such the background continuity is preserved when the graphic objects are rendered and subsequently superimposed onto the repainted background. To account for various backgrounds, the disclosed system uses a point-wise patching approach followed by a one-dimensional patching approach if the object spaces contain two different colors. In addition, a two-dimensional patching approach is implemented to account for printing effects such as half-toning and mosaic patterns.

Spectrally coordinated pattern search-imaging system and method

A system for selecting decorative materials is based on large numbers of high-resolution, full color images of decorative materials stored in a compressed format on an inexpensive medium such as a CD-ROM. In creating the ROM, each image is coordinated with additional information such as style of pattern, type of material, and other auxiliary information. Before final compression and storage of the image data color information is added by spectrophotometrically analyzing the decorative material. Color values for a background color and up to four foreground colors are determined. Individual colors are then referenced to a comprehensive color standard system containing a large number of standardized color swatches. Spectrophotometric color referencing allows the data records to be rapidly searched on the basis of color, as well as the other information in the record. Wallpaper patterns, drapery material, floor covering, or paint can then be rapidly selected on the basis of matching color. Various patterns and paints can be compared side by side on a high-resolution computer monitor that has been calibrated to produce an accurate color image. Finally, the chosen paints and other decorating materials can be rendered onto a room image so that the consumer can view an accurate simulation of the chosen materials.

Gaming machine and method for displaying symbols

A gaming machine comprises a display unit that displays video reels using computer graphics. Symbols are moved and stopped on each video reel. A game controller unit selects a type of symbols and an arrangement of symbols at random, and provides a player with an award if a winning combination appears on a payline in the arrangement of symbols and the player has placed a bet on the payline. A display controller unit causes the display unit to move symbols on each video reel, and then stop symbols in the arrangement. The display controller unit further causes the display unit to change a symbol of the selected type to a special symbol while moving symbols. Special symbols appear in a prominent form, e.g., in a background color complementary to a background color of other symbols, or in a metallic color, or in a blinking, flashing, or sparkling pattern.

Video manipulation of red, green, blue, distance (RGB-Z) data including segmentation, up-sampling, and background substitution techniques

RGB-Z imaging systems acquire RGB data typically with a high X-Y resolution RGB pixel array, and acquire Z-depth data with an array of physically larger Z pixels having additive signal properties. In each acquired frame, RGB pixels are mapped to a corresponding Z pixel. Z image resolution is enhanced by identifying Z discontinuities and identifying corresponding RGB pixels where the Z discontinuities occur. Thus segmented data enables RGB background substitution, which preferably blends foreground pixel color and substitute background color. The segmented data also enables up-sampling in which a higher XY resolution Z image with accurate Z values is obtained. Up-sampling uses an equation set enabling assignment of accurate Z values to RGB pixels. Fixed acquisition frame rates are enabled by carefully culling bad Z data. Segmenting and up-sampling enhanced video effects and enable low cost, low Z resolution arrays to function comparably to higher quality, higher resolution Z arrays.

Pixel border for improved viewability of a display device

A display device having a display matrix including a pixel border of width x and located around the edge locations of the matrix for improved viewability. In particular, the border can be several pixels wide, e.g., 1<x<5. In one embodiment, the border is two pixels wide and surrounds a liquid crystal display (LCD) matrix area in which images are generated from a frame buffer memory. In one embodiment, the pixels of the border are “dummy pixels” each containing a red, a green and a blue subpixel. Each subpixel has a color filter and is manufactured with a “dummy” transistor which operates to fix open the subpixels thereby allowing a predetermined amount of “white” color brightness through the dummy pixels. In one implementation, the brightness amount is approximately 80–95 percent of the saturation brightness for the display screen. The pixel border is useful for increasing viewability of characters that are displayed along the edge of the LCD matrix area in which images are generated from a frame buffer memory. The pixel border is particularly useful for these edge displayed characters when the background color is white and the characters are generated using a non-white color. The pixel border is also advantageous in that it can be used with conventional character generation processes of the operating system of the computer used to drive the display screen. In one embodiment, the novel display can be used within a portable computer system or other portable electronic device.

Image processing

There is described an image processing method in which a scene is repeatedly imaged to form a series of input images. For at least a subset of the input images, a colour calibration procedure is conducted which populates a foreground colour histogram with the frequency of occurrence of colour values in a stencil area of the input image, and populates a background colour histogram with the frequency of occurrence of colour values outside of the stencil portion of the input image. For at least a subset of the input images, a colour replacement procedure is conducted which updates the stencil area based on a determination, from the colour values of pixels within the input image, of likelihood values representing the likelihood of pixels belonging to an image area of interest, the likelihood value for each colour value being determined from a combination of the foreground and background colour histograms, replaces the original colour values of pixels within the updated stencil area of the input image with replacement colour values, and displays the image on which colour replacement processing has been conducted. In this way, a stencil area is determined based on foreground / background histogramming, and used both to define an area to which colour replacement processing is to be conducted, and also an area for use in further populating the colour histograms to calibrate the colour replacement processing.

Page background estimation using color, texture and edge features

An algorithm for estimating which pixels belong to the background of a scanned page. The algorithm is particularly designed to handle situations in which the page background varies in color / intensity, as is case when bleed-through artifacts from the reverse side of the page appear in the background. In determining background regions, including properly classifying bleed-through artifacts regions as such, the algorithm uses multiple local and global criteria for making the determination. In addition to being able to find large connected pieces of background, the algorithm is also able to find isolated islands of background by analyzing transition characteristics of neighboring regions. Regions are identified on the basis of similar local features and also by the nature of transitions between foreground regions that do not directly share a boundary. An adaptive white-point adjustment technique based on identified background regions improves the perceived quality of the printed output.
