Mobility management entity for high data rate wireless communication networks

A session controller provides mobility management support in a 1xEVDO wireless communication network, such as one configured in accordance with the TIA / EIA / IS-856 standard. Operating as a logical network entity, the SC maintains location (e.g., a pointing tag) and session information at an access network controller (ANC) granularity, thus allowing it to track access terminal (AT) transfer between ANCs but within subnet boundaries, where a network subnet comprises one or more ANCs. This allows a packet control function (PCF) to maintain location information at a packet zone granularity, thereby reducing mobility management overhead at the PCF. The SC provides updated tag and session information to PCFs, ANCs, and other SCs as needed. Information exchange with other SCs arises, for example, when two or more SCs cooperate to maintain or transfer routing and session information across subnets.

Method and System to Assign Mobile Stations to an Unlicensed Mobile Access Network Controller in an Unlicensed Radio Access Network

The present invention provides a method and architecture on how mobile stations (MS 132) are provisioned about information of an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) network controller (UNC 142). The UNC (142) in accordance with the present invention provides three different logical roles (i.e., provisioning (300), default (302) and serving (304)). More specifically, the present invention provides a method for assigning a mobile station (MS 132) to an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) network controller (UNC 142) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN 102). The MS (132) is connected to a provisioning UNC (402) and discovers a default UNC (404). A serving UNC (406) is then determined to assign the MS (132) to and the MS (132) is assigned to the serving UNC (408). The serving UNC (620) can be the default UNC (612), the provisioning UNC (604) or another UNC.

Method and system for improved handover of mobile stations to unlicensed mobile access networks

A method and system for handover of a mobile station (MS) to an unlicensed mobile access network controller (UNC) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN). In one embodiment, the MS sends an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) radio resource (URR) Registration Request message to the UNC with one or more location identifiers for the MS. The location identifiers may include a GSM Cell Global Identity, an access point (AP) Radio Identity, a set of GPS coordinates, or an AP location. The UNC selects absolute radio frequency channel numbers (ARFCN) and base station identity codes (BSIC) values from a table based on the location identifiers and returns them to the MS in a URR Registration Accept message.

Signaling method for paging in a mobile communication system for high-speed packet data transmission

A signaling method for transmitting packet data including information indicating an MN ID of one target access terminal (AT) among a plurality of ATs from a packet data service node (PSDN) to the target AT in a mobile communication system including a service system connected to the PDSN and a data location register (DLR), a plurality of access systems each having an access network controller (ANC) connected to the service system, and a plurality of access terminals (ATs) for communicating by radio with the access systems. In the signaling method, upon receipt of a message informing the access system of arrival of the packet data, the access system transmits a Paging Request message to the DLR. Upon receipt of the Paging Request message, the DLR storing location information of the plurality of ATs within areas of the plurality of access systems searches a location of the target AT. The DLR transmits a Paging Response message including a return of the Paging Request message through the service system to a, target access system where the target AT is located among the plurality of access systems, and transmits a Paging Command message to the target AT. Upon receipt of a Connection Request message for the packet data from the target AT, the service system transmits the packet data to the target AT through the target access system.

Handover between a cellular network and an unlicensed radio access network using a single identifier for all the access points

In cellular mobile networks handover between base stations of adjacent cells requires the identity, address and frequency of all adjacent cells to be known to other elements of the network. Conventional networks (e.g.cellular networks) can be extended by the addition of unlicensed-radio access networks. Said unlicensed networks can include an access network controller preferably connected via a broadband network to a plurality of low-power local base stations, which communicate with mobile stations over an unlicensed radio interface. The number and changing location of the local base station renders the operation and maintenance required to enable handover from the conventional network to these access networks prohibitively complex. This difficulty is alleviated by assigning to all the mini-cells of the unlicensed network a single identifier being said single identifier associated to the access network controller. With this arrangement regardless of which base station mini-cell an active call is being handed-over to, the conventional network will be able to route the request to the access network controller.

Early service loss or failure indication in an unlicensed mobile access network

An Unlicensed Mobile Access Network Controller (UNC) and method for providing an early indication of service failure to a mobile station registered with the UNC. When the UNC detects a network failure that prevents service to the mobile station, the UNC prohibits new registrations by other mobile stations, starts a timer, and monitors the network failure to determine if the failure clears. If the failure clears before the timer expires, new registrations are accepted from other mobile stations. However, if the timer expires before the failure clears, the UNC continues to prohibit new registrations from other mobile stations, and deregisters the mobile station when a network Keep Alive timer expires for the mobile station. When a plurality of mobile stations are registered with the UNC, the UNC deregisters the plurality of mobile stations one at a time as the network Keep Alive timer expires for each mobile station.

Method for monitoring channel switching process as well as terminal and general access network controller

The invention discloses a method for monitoring packet transmission channel in the switching process between access network sub-districts and other sub-districts using random access techniques. In the packet transmission channel switch process, the terminal or universal access network controller triggers the releasing protection operations to packet transmission channel, thereby avoiding the release of packet transmission channel. The invention also discloses the corresponding terminal and universal access network controller. Since the invention logically links together the packet transmission channel switch process and the monitoring of the packet transmission channel, the packet transmission channel will not release beforehand in the switching process, and the terminal can smoothly and timely come back in the source sub-district for avoiding service jitter when abnormity occurs in the switching process.
