Method for determining the rotational position of the drive shaft of a direct current motor

A method for determining the position of an element driven along a travel segment by a shaft of a motor includes counting current ripples detected in an armature current signal of the motor as the motor shaft rotates to drive the element. A first time interval between when the motor is turned on with power being supplied to the motor and when the first current ripple is detected is determined. A second time interval between when the last current ripple is detected after the motor has been turned off with the power supplied to the motor being interrupted and when the motor shaft stops rotating is determined. First and second current ripple components corresponding to the first and time intervals, respectively, are estimated. The position of the element along the travel segment is determined based on the counted current ripples and the estimated first and second current ripple components.

Apparatus and Method for Measuring Drilling Parameters of a Down-the-Hole Drilling Operation for Mineral Exploration

Apparatus (100) for measuring drilling parameters of a down-the-hole drilling operation for mineral exploration includes a module 10.1 mounted in-line with a drill string (110) and proximate to a drill bit (120). The drill string (110) is rotated and progressed down the hole. The module (10) has sensors for sensing conditions. The apparatus (100) measures drilling parameters based on the sensed conditions. The measured data is logged in the module (10) and then transmitted to a computer for a drilling operator's use. The drilling operator monitors progress and optimises performance of the drilling operation based on the measured data. Measurement of drilling parameters based on sensed data proximate to the drill bit enables accurate determination of actual WOB, torque and RPM fluctuations, axial vibration, radial vibration, temperature, RPM. A second module 10.2 is mounted in-line with the same drill string (110) but away from the drill bit (120). The second module 10.2 measures the same drilling parameters as the module 10.1 proximate to the drill bit (120). The driller is provided with the data recorded by the second module 10.2 to judge the performance of the drilling operation. Comparing drilling parameters based on sensed data proximate to the drill bit and distal to the drill bit enables accurate determination of vertical drag/resistance of the drill string (110) within the hole, rotational resistance of the drill string (110), degree of wind-up of the drill string (110) and presence of stick-slip conditions at lower end of the drill string (110).

Method for controlling biooxidation reactions

Biooxidation reactions can be controlled by a method which comprises the steps of: (1) independently adding a substrate and a co-substrate at predetermined rates to a bioxidation reaction mixture comprised of a biocatalyst; (2) measuring the oxygen consumption rate and carbon dioxide evolution rate from the reaction mixture; (3) determining the instantaneous rates of substrate and cosubstrate consumption by solving simultaneous equations relating carbon dioxide evolution rate and oxygen consumption rate to the substrate oxidation stoichiometry, the cosubstrate combustion stoichiometry, and optionally the biomass formation stoichiometry; (4) simultaneously adjusting the substrate and cosubstrate addition rates to the rates of substrate oxidation and cosubstrate consumption in order to maximize the rate of product formation while simultaneously minimizing the rate of cosubstrate usage. The method provides a rapid means of controlling fed-batch biooxidation reactions which can employ in-line techniques and is broadly applicable for diverse oxidation reactions.
