Calibration method and device for long range guided wave inspection of piping

The present invention is for a simple, reliable and inexpensive method to calibrate a defect signal to determine the size of a defect in a pipe. A first reflected signal is received from the test area of the pipe. After attaching a clamp, a second reflected signal is received from the test area of the pipe. If defects are in the test area, by appropriate calculations using the first reflected signal and the second reflected signal, the size of the defect can be determined.

Compensation for cardiac shunt currents during defibrillation

InactiveUS20070100381A1Simple and reliable and inexpensive implementationSimple and reliable and inexpensiveHeart defibrillatorsEngineeringCurrent pulse
A defibrillator having a pair of electrodes for delivering a defibrillation shock and a method thereof is provided. The defibrillator includes an energy-source circuit that may be discharged through electrodes on a patient to provide a biphasic voltage or current pulse. The energy-source-storage circuit is coupled across a bridge switch for delivering a defibrillation pulse to the patient through a pair of electrodes. A controller operates to control the entire defibrillation process and detects shockable rhythms from the patient via an ECG front end. The controller determines the source of the defibrillator to match the selected mode, which is inputted by connecting coded accessories, such as internal paddles, adult electrodes, or pediatric external electrodes to deliver appropriate defibrillation shocks. Other types of patient-dependent parameters are also employed to achieve the impedance compensation.

System and method for providing a single-layer video encoded bitstreams suitable for reduced-complexity decoding

A method and system of reducing the computation load of an MPEG decoder by changing the encoding algorithms in a video-processing system are provided. During an encoding mode, a stream of data blocks is received and at least one motion vector and one motion compensation prediction value for each macro-block are generated. The prediction value is transformed into a set of DCT coefficients. Prior to the quantizing step, the set of DCT coefficients are modified according to predetermined criteria. To this end, the total energy level of the DCT coefficients excluding the lowest 2×2 DCT coefficients is computed, and last column and last row of the DCT coefficients is discarded alternatively until the total energy level of the DCT coefficients reaches a predetermined energy level. Therafter, the discarded column or row is assigned to a predetermined value. The modified DCT coefficients are then quantized and encoded, thereby generating a bit stream of encoded macro-blocks, which are subsequently decoded according to a conventional decoding process.

Gap histogram on-line randomness test

A method and apparatus for testing random numbers generated by a random-number generator in real time. A stream of random bits generated by the random-number generator is segmented into a predefined block of bits, then these blocks undergo a gap-length-calculation operation in which it is determined for which specific range the gap belongs to, then these gap length values are applied to an exponential-counting operation to obtain and update gap-frequency values for different bit patterns and gap ranges. Thereafter, the updated gap-frequency values are compared to at least one predetermined acceptance range, so that if at least one of the gap-frequency values falls repeatedly outside the predetermined acceptance range more than a predetermined number of times, it is determined that the generated random bits are insufficiently random.
