A method of enhancing a server's ability to withstand a SYN flood type denial of service attack is presented. Modifications to the TCP / IP layer of a server reduce the amount of system resources that are allocated, and the amount of CPU overhead that is required to process a connection request until the TCP / IP three-way handshake is completed to verify the presence of a legitimate client. Specifically, the TCP / IP layer allocates a small TCP control block (TCB) of a size sufficient only to service the connect request upon receipt of the SYN packet. A full TCB is not allocated until the connection is completed. Further, the TCP / IP layer delays notification to the socket layer of the receipt of the SYN packet until after the connection is completed. Finally, the route information of the connection is not cached until after the connection is completed.

The invention relates to transfer of packet data from a first subsystem via a network node in a second subsystem to a terminal in the second subsystem. The method includes negotiating identifiers identifying a data flow of the first subsystem via a separate signalling element during the set-up of an application-plane logical connection of the terminal. A thermal module for use on a spacecraft to control thermal loads coming from a heat source is disclosed. The thermal module includes a two-phase loop system and a heat rejection system. The two-phase loop system includes a thermal collector, a heat flow regulator, a by-pass line, and a condenser. The condenser and the heat rejection system are thermally coupled, such that the heat flow regulator redirects part of the thermal loads from the heat source to the condenser, from which the heat rejection system directs said thermal loads to a heat sink. The temperature of the heat source is regulated by bypassing another part of the thermal loads back to the thermal collector through the by-pass line in a proportional manner, to avoid overcooling the heat source. The heat rejection system is designed based on the hottest possible conditions for the spacecraft mission.

A method provides for building a network coding scheme for the transmission of data between multiple source nodes and multiple destination nodes in a communications network having multiple nodes. The method includes the steps of: for each destination node, determining a first set of source nodes from which there exist disjointed paths, in the communications network, to reach the destination node; determining a second set of source nodes which is the intersection of the first determined sets for the destination nodes; and determining a sub-network for implementing the network coding. The sub-network includes source nodes which belong only to the second set of source nodes, the multiple destination nodes, and nodes included in the disjointed paths connecting the source nodes of the second set of source nodes and the destination nodes. The method also includes the step of building a network coding scheme based on the determined sub-network.
