Driving methods for bistable displays

Driving methods are described for display devices which have one or more dielectric layers in the path of an electric field driving the display. In an embodiment, image uniformity is improved by periodically refreshing, using an intermediate color state, pixels that remain in one color state before and after a change in displaying a first image and a second image, and by applying driving signals using voltage levels and durations that maintain a global DC balance in the display at near zero to avoid contrast reduction and image artifacts in the image.

Knocking control system and method for internal combustion engine using multiple fuels

High octane fuel and low octane fuel are supplied into the combustion chamber of an engine from high-octane fuel tank and low octane fuel tank via a high octane fuel injector and a low octane fuel injector. During a knocking control, if the quantity of high and low octane fuels in the respective tanks has been unbalanced, the supply ratio between high octane fuel and low octane fuel is changed l to control a knocking occurring in the engine without changing the ignition timing.

Remotely controlled self-balancing robot including a stabilized laser pointer

Systems and methods are provided for projecting a stabilized laser beam from a robot being controlled through a human interface. The laser beam can be stabilized through the use of optics that continuously adjust the aim of the laser beam in response to measurements of the orientation of the robot. The human interface allows the operator to both observe the visual environment of the robot and also to aim the laser beam. The projected laser beam allows the operator to communicate from the perspective of the robot by pointing to objects or locations within the robot's visual environment, creating symbols with the laser beam, and make gestures with the laser beam.

Optical disk and method of integrating a high gain RFID antenna

An optical disk comprises a disk substrate having a hub and an annular optical metallicized data region extending radially outward from the hub. The optical disk further comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder affixed to the disk substrate, e.g., within the non-data containing hub region. The optical disk further comprises at least one linear antenna element coupled to the transponder, e.g., via pole lead(s), and extending within the data region. The antenna element(s) can be applied to the disk substrate as a patterned antenna layer over a metallicized data region, and can be electrically isolated from the data region. A method and system of identifying an optical disk is provided. A radio frequency (RF) signal can be transmitted to the optical disk at a range of at least five feet, and preferably at a range of at least ten feet. An RF signal with an identification code (e.g., a unique number) can be received from the optical disk in response to the transmitted RF signal. The activating RF signal can be transmitted by, and the identification RF signal can be received by, e.g., a handheld RF reader or an RF reader that is affixed to a building. The identification code can then be processed for many purposes, such as identifying the optical disk as a non-counterfeited optical disk, calculating a royalty, or tracking the location of the optical disk.

Full color organic light-emitting device having color modulation layer

An organic light-emitting device has a color modulation layer. The organic light-emitting device comprises a substrate, a first electrode positioned on the substrate and a second electrode positioned on the first electrode, wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is transparent. An organic functional layer having at least an emission layer is interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. A color modulation layer formed by a laser-induced thermal imaging method is positioned on a surface opposite to a surface adjacent to the emission layer of the transparent electrode, wherein the color modulation layer is at least one of a color filter and a color conversion medium.

Reliable message transfer over an unreliable network

In a communications network having a plurality of nodes adapted to communicate with each other, and more than one path available between most source-destination node-pairs, a network interface is associated with each node. Each network interface has a plurality of route tables for defining a plurality of routes for transferring each packet from a source node to a destination node. Each network interface further includes a path status table of path status indicators, e.g., bits, for indicating whether each route in the route tables is usable or is unusable as being associated with a fault. The network manager monitors the network to identify faults and provides the path status indicators to the respective network interfaces. Failed routes in the network are avoided based on the path status indicators. When a failed route is restored, such that the route is usable again, the path status table indicates that the usable state is restored. A balance of route usage in the network is maintained, without modifying routes or establishing different routes, enabling reliable and high-performance message transfer.
