Method of adding a device to a network

A method of adding a device to an existing or new electrical or electronic automation or multimedia network. The invention facilitates adding a device to the network that can communicate using various protocols such as LonWorks, CEBus, X-10, etc. over media such as AC power line, IR, RF, twisted pair, optical fiber, etc. The method is a mechanism for adding a device to a system that can be used by an ordinary user of network capable electrical devices. The method comprises the steps an installer would perform including the handshaking that needs to occur between devices to accomplish the binding process. A Functional Profile for LonWorks networks is given as an example. This includes a Home Device profile that employs an automated explicit type messaging for all devices intended for use in a home environment. The invention includes adding to the device an install button and a visual indicator for status such as an LED. Alternatively, existing buttons and LEDs on the device may be used for installed and binding purposes. Other methods of binding can be employed by the use of wired or wireless handheld tools, remote controls, etc. Other interfaces and user feedback can be used such as touch screen, personal computers, cellular phones, PDAs, etc which can offer simple ‘virtual’ binding by the press of an icon versus the physical button on the device. The binding can be performed locally or remotely such as via LAN, WAN, Internet, etc.

Listener specific audio reproduction system

A system for use with an audio reproduction system that corrects for distortion caused by the system as well as any hearing impairment suffered a listener. Test signals are introduced into the input of the system to produce test sounds that are perceptible by the listener. Using a pushbutton, the listener indicates when a test signal of progressively increasing volume reaches an audible level. The resulting measured values of the listener's threshold of hearing at different frequencies is compared with comparable data for a normal listener to generate correction values that are used to program an equalizer which compensates for not only the listener's hearing impairments but also any distortion produced by system components or room acoustics.

Global encryption system

A system and method for encryption, transmission and decryption of data based on a publicly or other wide area broadcast random number sequence. Encryption is by a selected subsequence from the broadcast random number sequence, the selection being at a sample time relative to a synchronization event, with the sample time calculated based on a private key. Decryption uses the same private key to select the same subsequence from the broadcast random number sequence, as detection by the sender and receiver of the synchronization event and a sampling time based on a commonly known private key allows the sampling to be synchronous. Alternative embodiments employ trusted agents if the tender and receiver do not have a common private key.

Device For Handling Data Items That Can Be Rendered To A User

A device (DVR) handles data items that can be rendered to a user. Such a device may be, for example, a digital video recorder. The device (DVR) comprises a network interface (NWIC, NWIM) that couples the device (DVR) to a network, which comprises other devices. A content analysis initiator (ECF) within the device (DVR) detects that another device, which forms part of the network, comprises a content analyzer. The content analysis initiator (ECF) causes the content analyzer (AVCA) of the other device to be applied to a data item (AVF).

Apparatus and method for correcting life patterns in real time

A method for correcting life patterns for providing feedback for an exercise program periodically or in real time is disclosed. The method of the present invention detects a starting point of a dynamic activity interval periodically or in real time by sensing movement of a user in daily life, and provides an exercise program for filling a deficient amount of activity compared to a target value in the detected activity interval when the starting point is detected. Therefore, the method of the present invention may simply provide feedback for an amount of activity of a pertinent interval at an actual starting point of the dynamic activity interval, and thus the user may effectively follow the provided exercise program for correcting life patterns.

Device initializing system with programmable array logic configured to cause non-volatile memory to output address and data information to the device in a prescribed sequence

A low-cost implementation of a switching system using a multiport network switch avoids the necessity of a microprocessor by using programmable array logic (PAL) configured to drive a non-volatile memory. The PAL includes an address generator state machine, a PCI control signal state machine, and an interrupt state machine. The non-volatile memory sequentially outputs address and data information, under the control of the address generator state machine, onto a bus connected to the network switch in order to initialize the network switch with initialization and configuration data. The PCI control signal state machine provides control signals causing the output address and data information to mimic a PCI burst transfer. Once the network switch has been configured, the non-volatile memory outputs a start command causing the network switch to begin running in a free-running mode. A memory overflow interrupt in the network switch is also enabled, causing the PAL to reset the network switch if overloaded.

Tubing misload detection mechanism for an infusion pump

An infusion tube misloading detection mechanism for an infusion pump is provided at a low cost with a safety feature of detecting misloading of infusion tube. When a door unit is to be closed with respect to a pump body in a misloaded state of an infusion tube, a misload detection inner door is pressed by the misloaded infusion tube. Accordingly, an interlock part is prevented from being closed with the pump body. Therefore, the misloaded state can be easily identified.

Method and an arrangement in a radio system

The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for testing receiver antennas in radio base stations. A low-power RF signal is emitted, having a frequency corresponding to the carrier frequency of the receiver. This signal is coupled to a transmitter antenna to be transmitted to a receiver antenna of the same system. The signal thus received is analysed by the receiver in order to determine the integrity of the receiver antenna.

Vehicle communications interface

An improved vehicle communications interface (VCI) is both economical and readily adaptable for running new software. The improved VCI includes a server coupled to a bank of processors. The server can communicate with a host, and the processors can communicate with different vehicle networks. Each processor includes a state machine and a media access controller for a particular vehicle network. The state machine identifies incoming messages that require real time responses and provides the requisite responses directly back to the network, without involvement of the server. Real time requirements of the server are thus relieved, allowing the server to run a non-real time, mainstream operating system for which new product software is readily available.
