Compact portable emergency aid apparatus

A compact portable emergency aid apparatus provides audible CPR instructions in any one of a number of languages and site location of the emergency. A compact housing has a plurality of inputs and has visual and audio outputs and has a battery power supply located in the housing. A solid state memory chip, such as an EE prom, is used for digitally storing emergency instructions therein in multiple languages in a compressed format. A digital signal processor or DSP is coupled to the solid state memory chip for selecting and processing stored emergency instructions. The DSP decompresses the stored instructions and converts the instructions into an analog signal for applying it to an audio circuit. The audio circuit is connected to the audio output for receiving the retrieved audio instructions and producing them audibly through a speaker or earphone. An GPS receiver is coupled to a visual output for determining the location of an emergency. The compact nature of the apparatus allows it to be easily stored and used when an emergency situation arises.

Vision based system for detecting distress behavior

A system and method for detecting a distress condition of a person in a monitored location. The system is configured to receive an image stream of the monitored location, and detect a human body or body part within the monitored location. The system maintains and updates a list of areas in which the lack of movement is permitted e.g. bed, sofa, chairs. Upon detecting that the person is no longer moving and exists in a new area that is not in the list of areas, the system enters into an acknowledgement session in which the system asks the person to perform a certain action if everything is fine. If the given action is detected within a pre-determined period the system updates the list of areas to add the new area therein, otherwise the system would execute a pre-defined function representing a response to the distress condition e.g. call 911.

An example safety system for underwater diving includes a biological sensor for detecting a diver in distress, an alarm system, and a rescue deployment system. The sensor detects an anomalous condition and issues an alarm, such as, for example, a buzzer or a flashing light. In another example embodiment, upon determining the existence of a major, persistent, time-critical anomaly, or upon being instructed by the diver, the system inflates the diver's buoyancy compensation device and brings her toward the surface at a controlled rate. In another example embodiment, upon determining the existence of such an anomaly, or upon being instructed by the diver, the system releases a buoy, allowing the buoy to float to the water surface and alert others. In another example embodiment, the buoy detects its position upon reaching the surface and issues a radio signal, indicating distress and its current position.

Distress signalling

A highly effective method and means for stranded or disabled persons to display visible distress signals that can be seen by search and rescue teams from a distance. The invention is achieved by providing, as part of the stranded person's equipment, a kit containing multiple particles of glitter material capable of reflecting sun rays or the rays from search lights. In use, the stranded person spreads or broadcasts the glitter material on the ground or in shrubs or trees in the surrounding environment. Since the broadcast material provides a myriad of facets focused in every conceivable direction to catch the rays of the sun or the rays from searchlights, it acts as a highly visible signal without the need for the stranded person to be aware of rescuers or to actively focus anything in the direction of the rescuers.

A portable distress light signal device generates a visual S.O.S. distress signal indication visible from a significant distance away. Indicia including the letters “SOS” are disposed on either side of the device. A first set of light emitting diodes (LEDs) are disposed on both sides of the unit, each positioned within the interior of the region defined by each letter of the “SOS” indicia. A second set of LEDs, preferably of substantial power and luminosity, is likewise disposed on both sides of the unit, within the interior of the “O” portion of the “SOS” indicia. A power cord and power plug couples the unit to a source of electrical power, such as the cigarette lighter socket or 12-Volt accessory socket of an automobile or other vehicle. Powerful permanent magnets are preferably disposed about at least the bottom and right side edges of the housing, permitting the driver of an automobile to rapidly secure the unit to a ferromagnetic surface of the vehicle, such as the driver-side door or roof, in both cases with the SOS indicia oriented in horizontal orientation for easy recognition by passersby. Hazard warning stripes are disposed about the front and back sides of the housing for further enhanced visibility. Upon the application of power to the unit, an internal microcontroller repeatedly switches power to both the first and second sets of LEDs on and off causing them to pulse in a repeated sequence that corresponds to the S.O.S. signal in international Morse code.
