A presence detection system comprising, among other things, a radio transmitter and receiver is described herein. The transmitter includes a motion detection circuit, a microprocessor, and a radio frequency modulator. The motion detection circuit is configured to direct a motion detected signal to the microprocessor upon the transmitter being moved in a predetermined manner. The microprocessor is configured to generate an encoded message that includes a preamble denoting a beginning of the encoded message, an identification code denoting a type of transmitter, and a check message (such as a checksum) containing information about content of the encoded message. Finally, the radio frequency modulator is configured to modulate the encoded message at a transmitting frequency.

An improved hand-worn signaling device is disclosed that comprises at least one light-emitting assembly on the palmar side of the hand and at least one light-emitting assembly on the dorsal side of the hand; in one embodiment of the invention, the palmar light-emitting assembly is red and the dorsal light-emitting assembly is green. One embodiment of the device also comprises a controller that detects hand motions by the user and activates the appropriate light-emitting assembly in response. In another embodiment, the controller detects the angle of the user's wrist or knuckles, and activates the appropriate light-emitting assembly depending on the angle of the user's joints. In another embodiment, the controller detects the spatial orientation of the user's hand, and activates the appropriate light-emitting assembly depending on whether the user's hand is positioned vertically with the fingers pointing straight up (the “stop” position) or in any other orientation. An interlock switch that prevents inadvertent activation, and a feedback device that enables the user to tell which light-emitting assembly is on, are also disclosed.

A device and method to enhance the visibility and thus the safety of users of open conveyances, such as motorcycle riders, bicyclists, skiers, and the like, is described. The device comprises one or more long, flexible strips containing LEDs or another light source inside of a long, transparent, flexible tube. The tube is worn around the torso that it passes over both shoulders, crosses in the back, and is fastened in the front so that both ends and also the center of tube are secure against the torso. A portable traffic sign and safety stand suitable for use directing traffic under changing conditions. The traffic sign may be rotated in the safety stand to change traffic direction to drivers. The safety stand may include safety features such as lighted signs on the sides. A color of a top surface of the light panel matches a color on the front surface of the sign over which the light panel is placed. A vehicle motion detector or proximity detector is oriented in a direction and has a detection zone for detecting moving vehicles in proximity to the sign. The detector illuminates the lights of the light panel after detecting a moving vehicle in proximity to the sign.
